Artscape and other ramblings...

Greetings all. I have been a bad girl for several reasons, I think.

I haven't visited this site as often as I want to - I have been slipping. I have been slipping getting more blog posts on my 40 Questions Blog Series out there. And I passed up going to an art show - Artscape in Baltimore...

Yes, one of the best art shows in our area - and according to some news reports, on the East Coast perhaps the USA occurred this past weekend in Baltimore. I don't sell at it, just my choice, but have been wanting to go to it and something is always preventing me to go. This year it was the heat - the whole weekend was God awful hot - 95 + degrees and we aren't getting any breaks here in Maryland. So I am a wuss - I just couldn't bring myself out to support my fellow artists.

This leads me to my ramblings... Why aren't there any indoor air conditioned art fairs during the summer time??? People during the summer often beat the heat by going to the movies, the mall, or any other place that is air-conditioned. Can anyone tell me where there are indoor shows during the summer and why aren't there more?

Thanks - end of rant,
Michelle - By the Bay Botanicals

  • Sounds like fun, Walt.

I'm heading to Ann Arbor in the morning -- temp is supposed to be 90 with a dew point of 75, so the weather guys are saying it will "feel like 100." This is Michigan?? Oh, well, Ann Arbor thrives despite the weather and the crowds will be smaller tomorrow which will make it easy to talk to artists. Actually, this is not atypical AA weather.
  • We're from the Northern VA area and most outdoor shows are spring and fall here and they've been usually in the high 70's to low 80's. This year has really been a killer though, with even our May shows being in the low 90's. We're going to Berkeley Springs, WV this weekend to vend at a friend's restaurant opening and it's supposed to hit 99 on Saturday. Probably won't sell much, but at least there's no booth fee and the food will be free!
  • Michelle, there is something about art that really looks better in sunshine and the outdoors although most of what we purchase ends up indoors. This has been an awful weather year -- cold in Florida and too hot in the north. Here's hoping Mother Nature is kinder if not the rest of this summer, in 2011.
  • Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen has an indoor show this weekend (in Delaware!)

  • Each area has a different culture based on our seasons. Here in Phoenix it is 110 with a low of 89, so we all head to the mountain areas of Arizona for shows. A lot of people get out of town to play in the coolness of 89 degrees. :-) Hey- it is all about perspective. I was actually so happy to get rained on for a couple of hours at my show over the weekend as it was such a welcome change from the dry heat. I made sure to do a walk-in booth and hosted a couple of families during the storm. I swear that 6 month old boy was flirting with me. So cute!

Indoor shows have the ease of not worrying about weather and dirt, but it is so nice to be outside on the grass. It is just a better, more pleasing atmosphere.

  • Wow - didn't realize so many folks love doing outdoor fairs. Just so you all know the weather forcast for this weekend will be 98 degrees (and don't forget humidity) and a low - yes a low - of only 80 degrees. This is why I am shows in our area haven't been well attended - because it is like this every weekend! Ugh - sorry to complain, I really think I am just jealous of all the other places that are actually cool. :-) Michelle
  • Because, Michelle, all of us northern folks are wanting to be outdoors -- we are indoors way too much and the culture of art fairs is that they celebrate the fun of being outdoors along with a cultural destination. Here in the Midwest we don't have mountains and beaches (well, that part isn't true) and we love to be outdoors as much as possible. If it is a beautiful day we complain to one another that we had to stay inside and work -- heck, we can go indoors for all kinds of things...
  • There are. They're called mall shows.
