Art in the Square in Georgetown TX

This will be the third year for this show, run by promoter, Lynette Wallace. It is scheduled for the weekend after Houston's Bayou Downtown. Since I have friends in Georgetown that I could probably stay with, I am considering this show. The layout looks nice, in downtown Georgetown. Did anyone do this show the first two years? I would be interested in your feedback. Lynette has extensive experience as a show director, so I would think that she would probably do a good job promoting and in making it an artist friendly show.

Thanks!

  • I also did Spicewood last year and it was a nice and kinda odd venue (the back courtyard of a Mexican restaurant) and the organizers were super nice and it was very organized. However, it was pretty slow. I did cover all my expenses (hotel, gas, booth fee etc). Weather was great. I don't think I will do it again, tho.

  • Thanks for the response Delpfine.  I'll keep it on the maybe list.

  • I did Spicewood last year.  It's a small show, both in attendees and in artists.  I think that there were only three jewelers, very unusual and very nice.  Speaking of nice, the organizers are great, as is the hospitality.  The fires in Spicewood made last year a difficult one for the people of Spicewood.

With no lodging expenses and not much in gas, I did ok at the show.  I would do it again.

  • Although I have not tried Spicewood, a friend attended in 2011.  He said that he sold one piece and made enough to cover booth fee.

  • Good to know, Gary.  I think I'll scratch that one off of the list.  Have you been to the one in Spicewood?

  • I did this show in 2009 & 2010 and visited in 2011.  The show was not a money maker for me.  There simply were not many visitors.  There seems to be an impression that people will drive from Austin to attend an art show.  In the two years I did Art in the Square, my guest book contained no Austin zip codes and my sales were to no Austin buyers.  The 2012 show date has been moved to an earlier weekend in October, the jury fee has increased (since 2010) and last year's jury deadline was extended.  Also, an email was sent last year a month before the show letting artists know that plenty of spaces were still available.  There were 80 artists listed in last year's full-color two-sided 17"x22" glossy brochure.  That's down from 180 listed in the 2008 promo.

  • Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but can anyone comment on this show from 2011?

    Thanks,
    Dow

  • I too, am wondering about this show.  I just got my invite, and I know my booth shot is not up to par, so I was surprised when I got it.  Is it possible they are having trouble getting people to come?  The booth fee seems high for a newer show...
  • I was told, do not do this show by several people who have done it fwiw.
  • I live near Austin, haven't done this show, but the skuttlebutt I hear is that the sales have been disappointing.  Austin has $, but Georgetown is where a Sun City community is based and many retirees show up. They have quit collecting and are there to looky-lou.  Dallas and Houston seem to be better areas for art collectors; Austin is for music and techies.  If you have a long way to come, you may want to think twice plus this year is hotter than hell and people's water and electricity bills are through the roof, so discretionary money is tight.
