Art In The Park, Plantation FL - Don't Bother

I exhibited my photography at Art In The Park in Plantation, FL last weekend (November 13 & 14, 2010). It was a complete bust. I didn't even make enough money to pay for the booth fee. I had plenty of visitors who loved my photos but there were few buyers. I only sold one matted 8x10 each day even after I slashed prices on Sunday.

The show seemed poorly organized. It was much more of an Arts & Crafts show, which wasn't how it was sold to me. To put salt in the wound there were some craft vendors who seemed to be selling 3rd party pieces made in the orient. One of these booths even won a prize, which was later retracted when it was pointed out to them that it wasn't selling original art. I heard from some vendors that the quality of the art at this event has been trending down in the past few years. Some complained that the cheap 3rd party stuff was taking sales from the other vendors. I don't know wether that is true but I saw few people buying much aside from food and inexpensive crafts.

To make matters worse the Show closed at 5:00 PM on Sunday. Sunset was at 5:30 PM and there were few lights in the park. We had one right by our booth, but it never came on. In the middle of breaking down our booth, we found ourselves working in the dark.

There were many unhappy faces among the vendors. It seems few artists made any money. I could be the fault of the economy but I'm inclined to skip this show next time anyway. The demographics were wrong for me and I wasn't impressed by the management.

  • I won't fall for that again, you can count on that.
  • thanks Andrea, you have some very good points too. I loved your work and I do it!! (my way). I did make the comment to the chairwomen that to know what is being imported and used as "art", someone needs to go to the Merchandise Mart and just check it out. You will see the buy/sell stuff there before it hits the street.!! They need to be more informed.

I did mention closing the show at 4pm as I passed the chairwomen in the dark but was ignored. Not much was happening from 4 on anyway. It would have been alot easier and safer.
  • Thanks Bonnie, for adressing the issues. I have also been mailing the committee with our concerns, so they have information to take to the next show meeting. I was in the tent next to you and saw you weaving on your beautiful gourds....if the judges had come by they would have seen that you make yours, one at a time!
I also heard from a friend in the crafts section that "incidents" occured. A couple attacked a painter (physically), and the police were called. Another crafter, who had been drinking, was making graphic sexual advances to nearby men.
This whole show ended up more like a soap opera than anything I have ever seen either in the art show or dog show world.
The obvious buy/sell being awared cash ($500-$300) awards, was such a slap in the face to those of us who slave away hour after hour and day after day. The judges never even checked my tent, and others I spoke with said the same thing. Several have contacted the show committee asking for a $50 refund, as they did not feel they were judged.
I live in the area and am a member of Art Serve. I informed the committee that in this area there are many nationally know artists and art authors that are available for judging: why not use them?
I will give this show another chance because I live an easy 15 minute drive and I did cover expenses this year. I do feel insulted that the pieces that I made, and spent 8, six hour days working on, were not even given a glance. Another buy/sell (crystals) came by and said "oh, I see you bought the big ones from Austria". (He's lucky I didn't slap him) I told him no, I bought raw Starfire optical crystal glass and spent many days working on them, faceting them and adding dichroic float glass.
The only thing that can top this ...in September I was awarded the big "grand prize" at Yellow Daisy! Yes folks, that "grand Prize" is not having to be jurried into next year's show!
Now that is about the worst insult than can be given to those of us who painstakingly make one at a time. Thank God, when they thrust the mike in front of me, I kept my mouth shut!
I am a taxpayer in Broward county and as such I worry about the liability and insurance issues of breaking down in total darkness! Seems like someone would think about the lights!
Let's wait and see how the committee handles all of the problems that have been brought to their attention.
  • well said Bonnie...thanks.
  • I too have done the show in Plantation for over 20 years. It was the first show of the season for me and I think it should go back to the old date, with no concern for other shows going on. I think this is why they lost the real artists, as there are many other shows in Nov. I also think it is not a lost cause, the customers in the area are looking for good art, not plants and all the non-juried stuff at the show. The fee is too high for the venue they now offer, I do believe it could be saved as a fine art show with the Junior Women realizing that the park is a great destination out of the city, with advertising and careful jury, it could be saved, please back to the old date and great art. It is also salt in the wound to award buy-sell awards that should go to the artist's creating one by one, one at a time, not supporting all of China, Bali and the call up and order photographs. It is so easy to spot this sort of thing. Continuity of the body of work, if there is none, they are not the artist, remember they are good at getting over on you, that is their job, fraud. Demonstating on an all ready painted painting is not painting, using clear gel on top of a painting for years, yes the same painting for years. A massive body of work of carvings, and a little old man sitting there carving on one piece, he may know how to carve but he didn't. The price points of this work are unrealistic, would you carve that for that. Think about it???????????? This is a major factor of many shows being bamboozled by these folks. I wish I could call up and order my work, I might be able to get my lawn mowed during the week instead of actually doing my art, one by one, one at a time. Why is it that it is the real artist's that know this and the folks jurying cannot catch on. It is common sense. I vote to save the Plantation show for the Junior league, put it back to the Oct date. Be confident in your show, bring it back to a REAL ART SHOW. You will have to offer it at a lower fee, to gain confidence in the artists. Advertise the park setting and parking availability, the quality of art. You may not make as much money, like all the artists at this years show, but you will save the show. Stand up for your show and date. The locals will go to all the shows, or both shows. It is impossible to make a date that there isn't another show. This promoter has ruined many a show, don't let them do this to you. You are a group of strong women that should not back done, earn your good cause, the Museum show backed down, this is a fund raiser, and like I said, you may have to offer that lower fee, that is the show that will fill with the real artists, your and my clients do not want to see the unjuried craft. Include the good hand made craft with the art, not plants and carnival atmosphere products with a fine art and craft show. I haven't made money at this show since you changed the date and quality. Keep the great awards, it will attract the real artists, have the balls to not let the buy-sell back, even the mistakes in awards that were made this year. I feel so sad that this has happened and I heard this from my clients. There are not many choices of shows the last weekend of Oct. Be confident and take a loss as we did this year or just tell us you are running a run of the mill craft show. There are too many of them and not enough great shows like yours used to be. PLEASE I have tried to be faithful to you, be faithful to us
  • I wasn't told about the fine arts section until it was too late. Not that it would have made a difference.
  • I am so sorry to hear you were not put in the fine art (juried) section. The application did have 2 options which I admit I did not realize was so different. I always applied for the fine art but back in the beginning, there was only one "section"....the WHOLE show was "fine" arts and crafts. The app does ask if you don't get juried in the fine art, do you want to be in the craft section (and not eligible for awards). I even said yes to that but would not have been happy there either. I am sorry this once wonderful show with exquisite quality on all levels and categories is going by the wayside like so many others.
  • I was invited to the show by one of the managers who saw me at Las Olas in October. She came around on Sunday to ask how things were going. I told her it was very slow. She said that Sundays were better than Saturdays generally and that it should pick up. It didn't. She then asked me if I had any requests. I told her I would have preferred a diferent location nearer the center. I was at the northeast corner of the park, as far away from the center as posssible. She said that the center was the fine art section and that it cost $225 per booth. I took this as an insult, I mean there were other photographers in the finer art section, what am I? I guess that was the juried section, which no one told me about or gave me the option to be in.

I could not be more unhappy with this show. I wish I had stayed home. It was a waste of money and effort, and worse yet was very disheartening.
  • I also did the Plantation show this last weekend. I used to do it years ago and it had no "unjuried" section then, only high quality arts and fine crafts. The last time I did this show was the last weekend of Oct. 2006 and it was still very good then. I did 1 grand less this time than last time and was grateful for that. One jeweler from up north left Saturday night because he only did $200 on Sat. and could not afford to stay with such low sales.

The show, as you said before, it going downhill with lower end items and more crafts than
art. It is a hard show to set up as you have to truck everything in on hand carts. The volunteers with the golf cards were there after 3pm on Friday which helped alot but almost none of them were there Sunday for breakdown in the DARK. They need to close the show at 4pm on Sunday and let us get out of there in the daylight as much as possible. To the shows credit, they did have breakfast both mornings and supper Saturday night which was accompanied with wine. However, that is not why were are there.

I did not hear anyone say they had a good show. Many were glad to get booth fee back and alot of artist were very disappointed as they too, were told the reputation of the show was
much higher. The entertainment was nice but they had alot going on for kids that brought many people in with no intent to buy, just entertain the kids...face painting, storytelling, sand painting, etc. The unjuried section was almost as big as the juried section; 65 to 75 juried. That is way too many "cheap" things to take away from the fine artists. The plants
were very popular too, especially the orchids. This is not ART!!

There were the usual over abundance of jewelers too. Per the show director, the categories were supposed to be limited by percentages depending on how many entered in each category...which totaled about 12-15% per category. Jewelry was not that way. There were 2 fused glass jewelers right next to each other and another one 30 feet away. One customer commented going by my booth that it felt like it was turning into a jewelry show.

From the rumblings I heard, many artists will be looking for another choice for this time slot next year. The promoter pointed out that the price was still very competitive to attract artists but if they can't get the buyers there, the price won't be enough of a draw. Quality is still the draw for "art" buyers...not quantity.
  • I've seen such lights before and I'll put one in my gear box. It just seems that management was clueless or didn't care, neither of which is good.
