Art in the Park, Myrtle Beach April 16 & 17

Anyone have any info on this show?

I usually run the other direction from shows that take applications up until the actual show.

My schedule is really sparce this April & I wouldn't mind picking up a show.

Any comments?

  • Meant Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.
Sorry for the vague misspelled title!
  • Just curious, are we talking about Myrtle Beach in South Carolina or is this some other beach?  You titled your blog "Myrtly Beach."
  • Well, to be fair, I think the Kmart is still open, just not in the best shape.  (I haven't been to the show in at least 2 years.)  But I don't advise traveling that far to do it.
  • Thanks for the info!

Being across from a  "Closed Kmart" was a good indication of the show quailty. I have too long a drive for that kind of experience.

My medium is whimsical clay sculptures.

  • Thanks, Ian kicking it around too as a filler show, but I don't know if it's worth the drive from Pensacola. Even if booth fee is only 105$, its 200 in diesel to get there.
  • I've done it several times.  I don't know what your medium is, but I can tell you that the jewelry category fills up nearly a year in advance for each of the shows.  So you may want to call and find out what categories are still available.

As far as the show itself.  It's small and in a park across from a rundown Kmart, and then is a few blocks from the beach.  You can't see the beach, but you will see people in flipflops and swimsuits.  That's if it's busy.  If it's not busy, you will see a trickle of customers and a bunch of homeless people.  (There is a pavilion area where local charities host free lunches and worship services for the homeless on Sunday.)

The first year I did the show I signed up for 2 of the events.  Summer was horribly hot, miserable, and I barely met expenses.  Fall was good, so I decided to try again the next year.  I tried the spring (miserable and slow), and then the fall was ok, but not as good as before.

I have stopped doing the show, because it just wasn't worth the effort.  You will see some buy/sell there.  You might get yelled at for having a storage bin visible in your booth (even if it's only visible from the side of your booth and only because you have the side of your tent up due to the extreme heat....  You also might get yelled at for not picking up the orange tape that portions off booth locations...for artists that haven't showed....

If you ask what the show rules are you might get the response, "How long have you been doing art shows?  Well, then you already know what the rules are!"
