Whoops, Paul -- sorry about that. Atlanta is NOT near Boca in my mind.
I appreciate Nancy's comments on this, but don't think that ALWAYS a first time show is a bad thing. If everyone waited five years to do a show until it was established there would be no new shows. We've participated in good first year shows lots of places, including Arti Gras, Cherry Creek and Arts, Beats & Eats. And then again in some first year shows that didn't quite get off the ground. One of the things we always looked for was what were their ties to the community, does it look there are some arts organizations or other groups to support it, and what are their plans for PR and publicity.
Nancy, thank you for your response...I think I get light-headed sometimes and say, yeah o.k. maybe I could do a first year show...I need a 12 step program....if it is decent, I'll see them five years down the road!
Paul, I think there is a review of that Miami show and sadly, I would have to say run away as fast as you can. You are looking at a 7-8 hour drive depending on where you live in Atlanta so I wouldn't really consider it near.
This is a first year show. It was originally scheduled to be held at the Boca Center but has subsequently been moved to Mizner Park. The organizers have experience putting on events as they have ties to the Miami Boat Show. They are trying to get a foothold in the crowded Florida art fair scene. The date is good though, don't you think? If you live near would it be worth your time and money to help build a decent art fair on this date?
The show is 11/19/11 - 11/20/11 put on by Oceanside Productions. I think they are the ones that put on a first time show in Miami that died a quiet death...
I have done two shows in Boca, one was the Museum show. I can sum up the museum show by one comment made by a patron - " I love it, it's perfect, I've got to have it. But I need it in an oil" I sell photography... In other words, if your work is not high end don't bother. The second show was the show put on by Hot Works. It got a good crowd but going on 3:00 on Sunday I hadn't sold a thing. Then all of a sudden people started buying and I did pretty well in the end. By this time several people had broken down and left in disgust. I wonder what might have happened for them if they had stayed. If I was still in Florida I would give the HotWorks show another try but not the museum show.
Paul, I live in Boca and have gone to this show a couple of years as a patron. I'd have to say it's definetely in an affluent community and it's sponsored by the Boca Raton Art Museum but..... I don't see large numbers of visitors. Nothing like Las Olas or Delray Affair or Coconut Grove. I'd say maybe 5-15K people for the weekend. Hope to hear how artists have made out at this event as I am interested too.
