OK, I keep running into this.  It says under media categories...watercolor...reproductions of all kinds prohibited.  And then in another place it describes in detail what kind of repros are allowed (ie limited edition prints).  Well, are they allowed or not?  If they aren't allowed in watercolor what are they allowed in???  That is just stupid.

I applied to a show once that said this and when I went of course 90%of the painters  had reproductions.  I like following the rules...BUT

I am thinking repros ARE allowed, does anyone know for sure?

  • Maybe they were really tired when they wrote the app?

Limited edition prints, are also reproductions if they are made from a finished work of art. Limited Edition Prints can also be original prints (no original exists like the finished one until the last color is applied to the edition) this would include wood/linoleum cuts, silkscreen, lithography, etching and intaglio. Limited editions are all the same size and look the same as the other samples of the group. If you make an edition of 8x10's and another set 16x20 it is not limited. It does not become a new print because you change the paper size, kind of paper or a color. Nothing fuzzy about it. 8-)

Perhaps they were also talking about reproduced items which can include other categorys.

  • You're right, a LE print is a repro of some kind, if it's not a monoprint (which would be labeled as 1/1, anyway).  But the knowledge can get a bit fuzzy at times vis a vis prints/repros/giclees/inkjets etc.
  • yeah,  I know it said that...it is just that why does it say AFTER all that "repros of all kinds prohibited" then?  I am thinking a limited edition print is a repro of some kind.  But oh well, I figured that the other was probably correct (the l.e. prints on 2 sides rule.)  Thank you for reinforcing that.
  • Careful reading of the text shows that limited edition reproductions are allowed, even to the point that two of the three walls of the booth can have framed repros; bins with repros have to be separated from bins with originals.  But they do have to be limited editions.  The rules for painters at Castle Rock are more generous than for a lot of other shows, many of which don't allow repros of any kind from painters.  It's a pretty level playing field for all 2D artists.
  • I guess they want limited repress.
