Are You a Morning Person

Are You a Morning Person

How much do you get done before 9:00AM?

There was a segment on the Today show yesterday about how people have less stress in their lives if they are early risers and can get a lot done before 9:00AM. What was interesting about it was that by the time the Today show had come on at 7:00AM, I had already done a ton of stuff around the house. I had watered the flowers (expecting mid 90's temperature), walked on the tread mill for a half hour, set up an interesting still life I had been thinking about shooting and taken some new pictures of my puppies, and probably answered a few forum/blog posts on AFI.

So here I am at 5:30AM preparing to post this as a blog.

  • When I was a teenager and college age I loved to sleep in.  In my twenties and thirties I preferred to work at night.  And then... one day... I started getting up with the sun.  Now, I can hardly keep my eyes open once the sun goes down.  I don't start working right away. I kind of ease into it. I love to drink coffee and go online.  Eventually, I start working.

  • And may I say, if you have ever seen any of Cassius's images they are seriously outstanding!

  • I do my best work after 10:00 at night . . .sadly I get up at 5:30!  :-(   and here is more bad news - my best work is when there is a nice craft beer next to my mouse.   I get all the paper work and book keeping and hardware attaching during the day - then late at night I sit down, turn on Pandora for music, open up a Porter and create . . hopefully.

  • Morning person...hands down.  Most of my shots are around sunrise.  During the summer hours I get up between 3 and 3:30, every day.  During the winter hours I might get up between 5 and 5:30.  I am in the office by 5:30 for my day job.  At what time I go to bed?  It varies...there are days that I am in bed by 9.  There are others when I don't go to bed until midnight or so.

  • For day job purposes, I cultivated the early morning hours because I could get a lot done before the boss came in and before conference calls start.  However, when I am in full blown creative mode, I'll be in bed by 10 to get a cat nap and then be back up at 1 and play with my glass through the night and into the day and then sleep in the afternoon.  I don't know if that constitutes being an early riser or a night owl.  But there is something so peaceful about being up with the moon and then watching the sun come up...

  • I love being up early, it's the actual getting out of bed that kills me.  I get a lot accomplished on the days I get up at sunrise and feel good about myself.  However, I love to stay up late and work too..and I really need 7 hours sleep.  I haven't figured that conundrum out yet.

  • Definitely not a morning person unless I have to get up. I can get up early when I have a show to set up or a meeting to go to. I do tend to stay up late and work.
  • Yep, when I'm checking my email at 6:30 this morning I can see you were being productive while I was sleeping last night, Jacki. Jacquelyn, you sound like a dynamo. Do you live alone? I'd think you'd be hard to keep up with.

  • Melanie, I am also not a morning person.  Oh, I do it when I have to or when I suddenly wake up way too early with my daily agenda spinning around in my head.  However, when I wake up about 6 am I find that by 11 am I am taking a quick nap on the couch.  So, what did I save?  My mom hardly ever was up before we left for school but my dad was the early riser and he hated anyone sleeping in.  He use to roll a can of frozen orange juice into the bed to get my mom up.  He pestered her so bad one day she dropped into the crib so he couldn't get in there with her.  Dad had this whistle that I can still hear in my head.  He would stand down at the bottom of the steps doing that whistle at 8 am on a Saturday morning.  We had to get up and get our jobs done.  I can't even open both eyes that early in the morning.  Yikes, it is 1 am.  Guess I better get off to bed.  I hate to quite now when I am being so productive.

  • AGH you morning people!!!  There must be a few others on AFI who are not.  I was raised by a mother who was a morning person.  She did everything before the sun came up.  I woke up to dinner cooking smells (to be microwaved later), cabinets slamming and pots clanking.  To this day I can't stand the sound of a cabinet door closing, so all of mine are left open.  She would also be sitting on the floor next to my bed with hot coffee staring at me until I woke up with a ton of words.  I love her to death, but my father the night owl is much more my speed.

Yes I totally agree that you morning people get a lot done, but I am a night owl and often don't go to sleep until you all are waking up.  We have our own fun.  I wish I could change but I just can't.  There is nothing better then reading a good book late into the night, or having a lazy day in bed when it rains.
