I have been juried into Manayunk or Corn Hill Art Festivals? I am wondering if I should do them after hearing from one artist that they are not that great. This will be my first year going up north. I will be up there for several shows in a row. I also applied to SoNo and Mystic Art Festivals. My medium is abstract nature photography. Any thoughts on these shows would be great.

  • (cont.) upswing of strong boutique stores, such as Three Potato Four, Revival Smith, Digs at Patricia Gorman Associates (an interior designer with a design store), The Little Apple Boutique and so many more even in this downturned economy. In addition, we have seen a surge of art galleries, 4 in 2010 and 1 in 2011! Not surprisingly, and this is big news, JANE GOLDEN OF THE MURAL ARTS PROGRAM, is personally collaborating with us to  bring Public Art to Manayunk with some projects scheduled to be unveiled during the 2011 Manayunk Arts Festival. This is an exciting time for art in Manayunk and I’m sure the excitement will be reflected in this year’s Arts Festival.

  • As the organizer of the show, I want to thank you for all of your feedback. We are working to make major drastic improvements to the show:

     

    1.     NO TOLERANCE BUY/SELL CAMPAIGN. An internal no-tolerance for buy/sell at the Manayunk Arts Festival campaign. However, this will always be a difficult task as many artists jury in with a set of photographs of their artwork and then appear at our show with buy/sell work. The no-tolerance campaign, now in its 2nd year works because we first give a warning and ask for the buy sell merchandise to be removed (while we wait) and then if it re-appears the vendor will be asked to leave the show immediately. ask anyone who deceives us by bringing buy/sell work, to leave the show immediately. 

    2.     ARTIST OUTREACH COMMITTEE. We have teamed up with other art connoisseurs to scout artist talent at other shows and recruit them to appear at the Manayunk Arts Festival. This hand-selected group of artists has to meet a certain criteria before they are even approached to exhibit at the Manayunk Arts Festival.

    3.     ARTIST HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE. This initiative features providing more space between artist booths to helping them unload during the morning of the show, accommodating their booth requests within a block, plus better prizes, an artist lounge with snacks and beverages for artists to enjoy during their break, and much, much more. The larger scope of this committee also works to set ground rules for sponsors, and works to only allow sponsors of the highest caliber and integrity that add value to the show. 

    4.    VISITOR OUTREACH. The Planning committee has been reaching out to interior designers and art collectors and enthusiasts to visit and shop at the Manayunk Arts Festival.

  • We were in Manayunk from 2006 to 2008. It's a very well run show, but we noticed a steady drop off in sales. We had a family conflict last year, but heard the area had been hit pretty hard by the economic downturn and many of the shops had closed. That part of Phila. is very much like Georgetown in DC, but from about twenty years back. Used to be blue-collar with mills and the like and is now condos and shops. Manayunk has great potential and the show does too. Just don't know what the show's potential is today.
  • I've done Corn Hill several times and only apply now if I need an insurance show. It is a lovely show. Lots of artists and craftsmen, huge attendance, but not good sales for me. Traditional sells well, lower prices sell well. Jewelry, of course. I do collage and handbound books. What I sell most of are my $5 cards. I know some who do gangbusters there. Western NY was rated as one of the top cities to weather the recession well and I believe that. My shows are better every year, even last year with a storm at most of them. This area learned to deal with the economy 10 years ago and the area has started to rebound. Since you do abstract work, I have no frame of reference except that the last time I did the show I was set up next to a photographer...artsy landscape and vistas mostly..she did great. I say try it.   • Hi Brett.. As with anything on this forum or elsewhere you need to listen to experiences, then weigh them against other research and your own experiences. Three, Four, Five artists may have a terrible show and you may nearly sell out. So much varies from one artist to another. Eventually you will have your own experiences and know how your art sells in a specific area. Then, just when you have it all figured out, other influences (weather, economy, patron type, trends etc), mix it all up and you may have different results at the same event the following year. My suggestion would be to learn from other artists about the event itself - well organized, cooperative promoter, helpful crew etc. But when it comes to experiences regarding sales - for the most part, that is typically subjective as it relates to the type/style of art the artist sells.
