Amish Acres 2011

Booked this show because of it's long history and ranking (#12) in the Sunshine Artists Mag.  We sell wooden Irish Treasure Boxes, and only a small handful of vendors found their sales to be as good as the prior year.  Unemployment high in this area (I am told) and folks are uncertain about what is going on (or NOT going on) in Washington......so maybe that is why there were so many lookers and not too many buyers.  We will make expenses and a few $ more for our pockets.  Despite it's ranking, we will not do this show again.  Nice promoters but just not a buying crowd.

  • As much as I truly enjoy Sunshine Artist Magazine the results of their surveys for the top 200 can be skewed. Mostly it is based on how many vendors there are and how many turn in their surveys.
  • This year makes our 3rd year doing this show.  Thursday was a fantastic sales day,  for us and most around us . We were located in section G. Thurs was a fantastic sales day,  Friday was good but Saturday was horrible (lots of families paying $7 a person to get in, not buying) and Sunday was ok.  We were equal to last year overall.  Complaints about buy sell from customers at the hotel, which ladies travel from Chicago and outlying areas to come on Thurs & Fri. (ladies weekend out)  Next year will be their 50th anniversary.
  • Sadly, I am beginning to come to that conclusion.  One would think that a rating system that is supposedly based on vendors reporting their sales figures would be a fairly safe way to gauge a show.  However, this show was not #12 in my book at all.  The promoters are nice, but some of the items allowed in made it less like a good arts/crafts show.  Glass nail files, olive oil, headbands.........just not what I expected.  SMH!!!
  • I would not rely on Sunshine Artists for any accurate information about anything.
  • The inclusion of the Chinese wood turners was something I found in poor taste.  Especially since Nappanee is home to some of the finest Amish woodcraftsmen in the country!  Would have much rather had them showcase them instead of the Chinese who have won the war without firing a shot!
  • I have just spoken to a few friends who were there this past week and their sales were down by 50%. The turn over rate of artists and craftsmen at this event has been very high the last few years. Some seem to be unhappy with the featuring of Chinese artists in the competition tent and It also seems they made have had problems filling spaces this year.
  • So sorry to hear about this.  I sure hope the economy picks up and gets better.  We have been in this slump for quite awhile and I keep thinking it is about time for a turn around.

  • My sales this year were 1/4 of what they were last year.  This was my best show last year.  Attendance seemed much less than last year.  I won't go back next year -- may reevaluate when economy is better.

  • Although the event is in a delightful area, and the promoters are nice folk, I will have to admit this will not be on our list of shows to do in 2012.  Thanks for your post Rich!
  • This show is not what is use to be. I did not do it this year as not only have sales at this venue declined in the past few years, so has attendance.  I have a couple of friends who are there now and I have talked with them over the last couple of days and they to have concluded that it's time for a change.
