Run by a local group
Nutshell: A storied art fair, knowledgeable attendees, my 2nd year there, love the people, sales just okay.

Load in is Saturday morning (I hate that), a bit hectic and parking is tight. But it is the city. Once you check in with the organizers, you really don't see them again. But it is efficient. There is a nice breakfast each day and indoor bathrooms for one and all. Rained a bit on Saturday but that really didn't keep the crowd away. This is a walking/public transit community so rain doesn't scare them. And it was great to talk to people who know and like art. And they come year after year. Sales were just okay for most of who that I talked to. Load-out was a bit frantic, since it was during a downpour.

  • Well, I did the show in the next block, the Hyde Park Community group. They didn't have breakfast but they did have paid workers supplied to us to help unload art and set up tents, they were also there to the very end helping everyone load up in the pouring rain. After check-in we saw our festival people constantly throughout the weekend offering water, booth sitting, and even running to local restaurants to pick up our food orders so we didn't have to eat over priced festival food.
The Hyde Park Community group provided the same customer base, a beautiful park setting, and extremely competent workers to cater to our every need ...even in the pouring rain.
Oh yeah, sales.... we had very good sales and we will be back next year!
  • I had a pretty good show but it didn't happen till nearly the last 10 minutes. Geez, I was a wreck, then all these people (from the neighborhood) descended at once and bought decently large paintings which was nice. Not to mention quite a high, if only you could bottle that type of energy, ha, ha.
Anyway, I thought the quality was down quite a bit, I walked the entire show and there were some real suspect booths, including several that painters that were definitely questionable - not buy/sell exactly, but some type of production situation I am guessing.
  • My favorite jeweler told me she had a fabulous show and sold things she never thought would sell. She did mention that the quality seemed a little down this year.
  • Barbara.....really appreciate your reviews. It really helps.
  • This is truly the best "neighborhood" show in the country. Such loyal customers -- sales not fabulous, but if you are local that is not as big a problem. Definitely a show everyone needs to do at least once as it is one of the grandmothers of the business, a rite of passage.
