What are the best things about art fairs
Meeting people (including fellow artists) from all over the world!
Best show ever and why
As odd as it may sound, it was actually a non-juried arts and crafts show called the St. Johns Mint Festival in St. Johns, Michigan. I rarely do those, but it was a 4-day event that I could drive to easily, very inexpensive and it was early on in our days of doing art shows. Although the venue itself was not ideal by any means, there was one customer who fell in love with my work and he and his wife ended up buying eight of my original acrylic paintings. For the money invested compared to the rate of return, this was probably my most profitable day. I guess it just goes to show that sometimes it's that one or two customers who can make or break a show!
Worst show ever and why
The annual summer juried fine arts fair in Saugatuck, Michigan. We live about 10 miles away from this great little resort town, and although the ambience and quality of art there was superb, as people who have been there frequently in the past as buyers, we noticed that every year the same artists seem to be there, with the same products each year. Still, we decided to try our luck. We don't feel there is enough variety - the show looks the same each year. At least for us, there were lots of lookers, but very few buyers.
