Years in the Art Fair Business

First show ever

I think it was in Georgia, but i can't remember. These days I am an artist coordinator for 2 art festivals in Alabama.

What are the best things about art fairs

The artwork and meeting people.

Best show ever and why

The Daisy festival in the late '90s. Sales were through the roof and we had a ball.

Worst show ever and why

I try not to think about those--just pick up my toys and move on.

Who referred you to ArtFairInsiders.com? Please be specific.

I've been reading it for a few years and i'm guessing you guys referred me via emails. Your newsletters are the most informative I feel and I like seeing what artists write. I always get an earfull anyway b/c we artists are vocal, but reading comments throughout the year is great. I do it to improve upon our organization.

  • Thank you, Paula, for referring Walt Stricklan to Art Fair Insiders.
  • Thanks for the compliments Paula. About Zapp -- it all depends on how you are positioning your festival. If you are strictly regional, know most of the artists who participate in your events, and aren't particularly interested in drawing applications from a broader area then what you are doing is just fine.

However, if you do want to expand your applicant list almost all professional events these days do use digital processes. The artists who travel for shows expect this. They are put off by pen and paper applications, as it shows that the event has a smaller vision of who they are and maybe it isn't the place for them.

You have to decide which kind of event you want to have. If you decide to go digital there are three easy choices: Zapplication, Juried Art Services and Entry Thingy.com. Zapp has the most shows listed with it, JAS has more of a boutique list of fine shows, EntryThingy is a few years younger than the others but is perfect for saving money, as each application costs the organization only $2 @. However, the other two will spread the word throughout their database of artist emails. Entry Thingy requires you to have your own database, but there are services out there that can spread the word, in particular, my own that has over 9000 artists with prices starting at $225. More details about this here: www.CallsforArtists.com.

    Best wishes.
