zap image format

I noticed watching the Des Moines jury that they streamed online how many people are using images without borders (square format rather than 4/3). Is this accepted behavior on Zap now? From what I used to hear it would get you DQ'd. The square images seemed to have an unfair advantage. Michael Doogan

  • Des Moines is using ZAPP projection system and any rectangular images that have been uploaded without black borders have had the black borders added by ZAPP for the jury. That's why you should never upload images to your profiles that haven't been prepared properly. 1920x1920 pixels square with black borders masking rectangular images. If you upload none square images smaller than 1920, ZAPP will add larger black borders and your images will project smaller than your competitor's images.

    • What I mean is using the full 1920 w/image edge to edge horizontally and vertically. Full bleed as if it was taken w/ a 2 1/4 format.
      • Full square uses the most amount of space available. As long as your images don't contain negative space around items (3D work) it will present your images as being as strong as they can be. As a matter of fact, I'm currently jurying with a set of still lifes taken with a Hasselblad, full 2-1/4 square film taking up the full 1920 square with the image.
