What do you all think the worst art fair food is?  My choice is the turkey leg.  I posed this question at an art fair last weekend and the turkey leg got the most votes.  A glass blower friend of mine told me that someone in his booth was using one as a pointer and actually touched the glass piece with the turkey leg.  I always live it fear that someone who just finished eating one ends up touching my work with greasy fingers. Yuck!!

  • I think the "taco in a bag" is the most frightening I have seen. I first spotted it at a show in Southern Illinois...a Chataqua?  A bag of doritos with fried "beef" dumped inside and then that liquid cheese ladled on top. Eaten with a spoon. We had to double check before I even believed it was real. I am also snobbish enough to think that this is to food as stuff on a stick is to fine art.

    • You would hate a real Philly Cheesesteak.
  • A rib cook-off might be right in there
  • OK, slightly off track here, but to cater to my Aussie sensibilities and obvious lack of the US lingo,   I haven't even HEARD of these types of food!   What on earth is Elephant Ears?  Kettle Corn? Funnel Cakes? gyro?

I'm assuming Turkey Legs, are literally turkey legs!?

Thanks for the heads up on Philly Cheese Steak - although I would have thought it was Philadelphia Cream Cheese (brand name out here) and steak with no bread roll involved!

I'm pretty sure that cotton candy is what we call "fairy floss" ; italian ices what we call "gelato" , and sno-cones are crushed ice with cordial?

Oh and Chris, you can't get bottled water (600ml /pint size) for under $2 anywhere here in Aus unless its from a supermarket.  Shows will often be $3 or more!!!

My pet hate is the kids with ice creams and the consequential sticky hands, or patrons with coffee cups that they put on my white tablecloths leaving nice brown rings!!

One fair I went to the lady next to me set up with imported (US) drinks and dropped a case of some pink frothy stuff that covered one side of my tables, spattered the rest of them including some of the jewellery and ruined 90% my packaging which was in a cane basket on her side.     That was probably my worst encounter with food at a show!

    • Annette, elephant ears and funnel cakes are the same thing.  If you google funnel cake, gyro, and kettle corn you can go to the wiki of each thing and you will get a picture, a description, and a recipe for each item.
      • Thanks Barry - just had a look.  So elephant ears are donuts!  Gyro is a "lebanese kebab" down here.   Kettle corn is completely new to me though there is something similar that is brightly coloured sweet popcorn that you can get in packs some places.  And I thought I was just going to learn about shows here ;)
        • All of the "food" listed above is nothing but a heart attack snack.  Best to avoid all of them, since nothing but they're variations on fried and sugared grease.

Jim, if I knew how to download an image to AFI, I'd show the White House Ruins shot I have.  I'm not totally computer ignorant, but where is the "download your silly pictures" button?

          • Michael, adding a picture is really easy and right in front of you.  Perhaps, that is why you can't see it.  When you post a reply there is a bar that starts with link on the left and html on the right.  The first icon to the right of the link button is a rectangle that says image if you leave your cursor over it for a couple of seconds.  If you click that a box opens up that asks where your file(picture) is. Navigate to where your picture is on your computer, when it loads the ok button will darken and if you click that your pic will appear in your post.
  • I have to laugh.  I posted this about people who come to the show, eat the show food and then have a burning desire to touch the work.  In my case, it could leave a fingerprint.  I didn't think anyone of us would actually eat some of this junk, especially elephant ears and turkey legs.
