I keep hearing murmurings about this fabulous art fair in LaQuinta, CA. I believe it is near Palm Springs and occurs in March. It seems as though the City is fully behind the event and officials come out and buy art for their public art buying program. Look at this:

The Civic Center art purchases have been placed in City Hall and at the library. The Ad Hoc Committee, composed of council members Kristy Franklin and Linda Evans and Community Services Commissioners Kathleen Fitzpatrick and Sharrell Blakeley, purchased eight pieces from various artists at the La Quinta Arts Festival.

The artists, locations and titles are as follows:

1. Kathy Dunham, City Hall, “Desert Diamonds”

2. Gabriela Firehammer, City Hall, (2 pieces) “Olas 106” and “Olas 211”

3. Scott Reach, adult section of the library, “Separate Reality”

4. Kathy Ross, youth section of the library, “Territorial View”

5. Justine Tot Tatarsky, City Hall, “Blue Mountain Quartet”

6. Kari Von Wening, youth section of the library, “Heart”

7. Kathy Ross, library, “You Are What You Read”

Can anyone fill me in with more information?

  • It's a fantastic show if you can get in.  My artist friend, a copper sculptor, sold phenomenally well and the city purchased his work as well.  At least 6 artists from Expo trekked out there to do it.  I'm applying next year.
  • This is one of the few California shows I consistently hear good reviews from other artists we know on the West Coast.  We're considering our first road trips outside of the Pacific NW and it's definitely on the list of ones we'd like to do. I have heard that it is very difficult to get into, due to the commission / re-invite status it's a challenge to be accepted, especially for jewelry.
