An article entitled "An Art Fair Survival Guide" appeared earlier this month in the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal. And while it deals more with "high end" art fairs like the Swiss Art Basel, it touches on the problem of over-proliferation of art shows and the dilution of the market for many.
Some of the details in the piece are interesting and I thought I'd share it for anyone who may want to look at it:http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/print/WSJ_-D001-20140307.pdf

I know some areas of the country have a constant flood of shows and probably a few less in those areas would help out. In Michigan there is a heavier concentration of Art Shows around the Detroit area. They certainly are very well spread out beyond the Detroit area. I have to drive at least an hour to get to a good show. I would go to more if I was closer. So, while some people may be over loaded I could stand to have a few more.
Argh, I'm sorry about that. I thought that the PDF provided viewing of the full article. I myself don't subscribe - the article was sent to me in hard copy form by a friend. Maybe that's still the best way to access content these days??

I have been hearing the cries of oversaturation of shows since I started out. It's not a new complaint. But it's called the free market for a reason. And anybody who wants to have a show can do so. How many very successful promoters were the "new guy" at one time?
Would be an interesting read but you have to be a subscriber to read more than the first page.
