I’m on the wait list for the May Birmingham MI show. I have not been on the wait list before, since the guild has been running it; or for any Guild show, for that matter. The Guild gave me my number, which is # 6 in Jewelry Precious.
This is low enough that I won’t say it can’t happen, but high enough so I won’t be really expecting it. If you’ve been waitlisted before for this show, what are my chances, do you think?
I sent in a backup but was rejected for that already. So it’s this show for that weekend, or nothing. Or promise the college student a little vacation before she starts her summer job….. :)
I’d like to say, though, that I admire shows, like this one, that give you your waitlist number. I think they have nothing to lose by being transparent, and it creates good will, if nothing else. Now, I have a good feeling about them, whether I am ever called, or not. As an artist you are able to make better informed choices. I’ve never understood why so many shows make it into such a mystery.

You probably have a better chance than I do of getting in, I'm #84.
I do appreciate knowing that. I already applied to a Paragon show at teh last minute.
Not sure if I'll make the cut, but at least I have a chance of something for that weekend.

I didn't know about this feature either. Really interesting and helpful to artists, isn't it?
Linnea, not sure if you have done this show before, but it is a bit of a drive for you and if your number doesn't come up remember there is sometimes very challenging weather, those May showers that make the show not always pleasant, although there is a loyal crowd at the show no matter what. Hope you make it.
I was just looking at callsforartists.com for that same date and see there is a show in Oak Park, IL, it might be worth a call to them to see if they have a space. I believe you could sleep at home there. Right?
Funny you should mention that.... :)
I had actually applied for Oak Park, as a backup. They turned me down! It's a very small show, maybe it is grandfathered, and I didn't realize. I did it several times over a decade (or two) ago (ouch): it was actually the first art fair I ever did! I stopped doing it when the kids were big enough that I could travel. A friend at the Field Museum where I worked as an illustrator was doing it. I had no idea how to even get started until he brought me in a spare application.
I've done Birmingham before; several times. I did so-so last year, enough that it made me question the feasibility of the drive. I'm trying to cut back the driving in general.
I agree. I also like when shows can tell you your place on a waitlist. I was waitlisted for Columbus and could watch my number progress on Zapp. I got in, but turned it down because I got into another show in the meantime. Great, but also a bummer because I've been wanting to do that show.
I'm doing Birmingham in the jewelry (other) category. I hope to see you there. I would think you are high enough on the list to get in.
