Vendor's licenses in Ohio

Does anyone know if you have to buy a transient vendor's license for EACH show you do...I applied to nearly 20 shows this year, so $25 bucks each would be pretty expensive.

I tried filing my sales tax for last year today, but lost my vendor's license #, so I can't file for last year, and I realized I might be expected to have on for every show.

Any input is much appreciated, sorry if this is a duplicate question, I did look through the forums.

Good luck to everyone this year!

  • Ohio now has a single transient license that is good for all counties. Similar to NY. I don't believe there is a charge for the license or is minimal upon issuance. Each county may have a different tax rate but it is all on the form. There is no renewal fee. However all filings (payments) are now required on-line. The first time can be a little tricky but the tax people will walk you through it.

  • Thanks again! I'm working on it!
  • "My understanding is, art show organizers are required to turn in the names and addresses of all the artists who participate in their art show. So you'll eventually get caught if you don't have a vendor's license and/or turn in your sales tax."

This is true, and even if you do have a transient vendors licence, sometimes the info the shows supply don't match up with the states info. OH will send you a letter requesting you get a vendors licence. But if you already have one, it is easy to provide proof by supplying them with your number.
I also like the fact that all of the tax repoting can be done through the Ohio Business Gateway, with your Vendor's licence number of course.
  • Oh, I forgot to mention, the $25 fee is a one time only fee, until you cancel your license.

    Hi,
I live in Ohio and have a transient vendor's license. It just means you can travel in different counties in the state of OH and sale. Yes, you definitely need to find out your # and file twice a year even if you have 0 sales!. I met someone who didn't file because they didn't have any sales and the state estimated their sales for them, added a late fee and billed them.
I like the way Kentucky does their taxes for out of staters. They just give you a form, you fill it out and mail in the sales tax. No filing twice a year.
I was looking into shows in Indiana, unfortunately they are like OH, you have to have a vendor's license and file twice a year. I called them and suggested they make it simple for crafters like Ky does. Didn't get anywhere and I decided it was too much paperwork.
Unfortunately states aren't making it easy for artists. My understanding is, art show organizers are required to turn in the names and addresses of all the artists who participate in their art show. So you'll eventually get caught if you don't have a vendor's license and/or turn in your sales tax.
    Good luck

  • Hi,
You just pay the $25 fee once but you do have to file twice a year whether you have sales or not. I think you need to call and find out your # and pay your back taxes. Ohio can be be really a bear about their sales taxes. You also need to find out how many shows you can do and still considered a transient especially because you live in Ohio. I live in PA and do only a few shows year in Ohio.
  • BTW, I do have an EIN #, but it seems like this is not enough???

    thanks again!
