First, I'm new to the air fair world. I started this year. I did 4 small shows and 2 larger obese. I clearly did better at the larger shows. I consistently got comments complimenting my talent, but so many of the strongest admiorors left without buying. I learned from conversations that people don't have a home for my heart. I paint children in life's moments - pretty specific. My point, I have a passion for printmaking and am on the verge of having the money to purchase a home press. This would allow me to produce prints timely. I want to show both my watercolors and my prints. Do you think this will make too disjointed of a booth? My work: Facebook.com/kayebishopstudios Thank you!

  • So you'd be doing woodcuts instead of painting? or you wanted to do both?

Some shows are a little looser in their requirements, but the nature of this business is that you pretty much have to specialize. Pick a media and excel in that.

I love woodcut prints - I did a feature on Nick Wroblewski, a printmaker a little while back. Take a look here. http://www.artfairinsiders.com/profiles/blogs/featured-artist-nick-...

  • Thank you very much for the insight. Being new to the art fair world I was not aware of those hurdles. I am not talking about reproductions of my watercolor. I am referring to would cut printmaking.

I have been passionate about the printmaking process since college. However, when I graduated I lost access to a printing press.
  • What it will do, Kaye, is not get you into the better shows. Will you apply in both media? Usually this really complicates things, requiring two applications and then one media will be accepted and then not the other. One of the problems with this business is that artists are usually required to to choose one media when jurying for the better shows. It is kind of up to you to figure out your focus. Why would you be doing the printmaking? Will these all be "hand pulled original prints"? You are not talking about reproductions of the original painting are you?
