  • Debit cards have no fees since it is the same as writing a check.  I use mine for nearly all purchases and have gone from carrying a lot of cash to carrying almost none.

I do like not celebrating this holiday.  I do not get caught up in the present giving frenzy.  We buy art from those who make it throughout the year but if it is a purchase with someone in mind, we do not wait for this silly holiday to present the present.

...and Bah Humbug to you too:))

  • I know I'm using my cc much less personally.  I'm trying to get out of debt myself and pay off the cars and house faster.

  • Thanks!

I wonder how this will translate out to art fair sales. In recent years (after 22 years of art fairs), I have seen the number of credit card transactions go steadily up, and cash sales down.

I used to count on the weekend’s cash influx, when on the road, to pay my own expenses. Now I have to bring money for food!

The chief exceptions were those who brought cash,  1) trying to save the artist the percentage (and said so), or 2) trying to hide the purchase by not having it show up an a credit card statement.

I did this myself recently, in buying a Christmas present for my husband, a flat-woven Kilim rug from Afghanistan. It was a deal, but still $$. I saw it, and went home for cash. He would be unhappy if he knew how much it really cost, as he thinks everything should cost about a third of what it really does.

As my proportion of credit card sales has gone steadily up, I have wondered how many of these sales would have happened if the purchasers had to budget for them.  Maybe I will find out next season?!

    • We don't see a rise in credit cards, but do see a rise in Debit Cards...the new cash.  Seems to be more convenient for the customers to buy this way.  Use of straight credit cards seems to be on the decline, at least for us...probably due to the current economic uncertainty.

  • Hey Geoff,

I clicked it and it went through... Sorry for the trouble. I'm an artist not a web expert!
  • I'm not able to view the content of the article...could you check it and repost (if you can)?

    Thanks
