The Square

Hi,  I started this discussion on the blog posts but was requested to put it on here.  Has anyone used the Square https://squareup.com to take credit cards yet?  Another blogger said that there was an article in the New York Times about this device last week.  You need an iphone, ipad or ipod touch or an Android phone.  No monthly fees, just a charge for each swipe. No paper receipt.

  • Haven't used it yet - just read about it. But it sounds like a great idea. Need to look into it more.

    • I suggest reading the forums on the Square website. They have undergone major changes in the past few months, the most important to me was the transaction limits. I believe they have been lifted, but only the first 1000 gets deposited immediately, the rest takes a week or so? Once a relationship is established, that waiting period is lifted. At least that is how I read it. Yes, there is no paper receipt although it will email one. The rates are pretty low when you factor in no monthly, etc. I think this whole cc thing is undergoing a sea change and we won't recognize it in a few years. I may get one just as a back up for now and see how I like it. As for reception, we travel cross country twice a year and I only lose bars on my iPhone in the most remote places. I know there are dead zones in certain places, but I've seen people have the same problem with the usual terminals, too.
I think it is an interesting concept and, since it is free, can't hurt to try it.
