So i'm a little annoyed that I havent gotten into any of the texas shows I applied to. I am thinking of applying to Midtown art in the park- 4/11 which is in Houston and Buda Fine art express 4/17-19. has anyone done either of those? I'd love some info!!!

  • I was accepted into both Buda (Austin area) and Midtown (Houston). Midtown was to occur the weekend before Buda but first postponed to the same weekend as Buda due to rain forecast, then with another rainy weekend forecast rescheduled completely to Oct 24. I understand they will not re-open applications / rejury on Zapp.

Buda was my first out-of-town show, so my primary goal was learning/logistics, so the fact that I didn't make my booth fee was disappointing but not crushing. Maybe 300 people came through Friday evening through Sunday, so it's pretty clear to the committee that their primary job next year is promotion and getting out the crowds.

I will say Buda was the best show I've done in terms of artist hospitality and approach-ability of the committee members, etc. It was under a large pavilion so protected from the periodic thunderstorms that weekend, though one unfortunate booth on the edge bit the dust from winds from an overnight storm.

I would love to see Buda turn things around next year. They have some good lessons learned and suggestions to build on.

  • Hi Megan, sent you a friend request because we seem to do or be interested in similar shows. I also replied to your inquiry about Buda, but for some reason, it didn't show up. I participated in the Buda show last weekend and I'm sorry to report that it was my worst show in 14 years if doing shows... Just no customers. The few that happened upon the show were not art patrons and most people left with no bags at all. It was a shame because it was a very nice little town and the people who run it now are quite nice. Just don't know if it will ever be any good. Just an FYI, another one to avoid in Texas is Winnsboro. It is on Zapplication also. Hope this helps!

    • I also did Buda last weekend and had the same experience as Jonna.

I've done Winnsboro twice, but I won't be doing it this year.  The artist amenities are great and the people who run the show are wonderful.  I would love for this show to succeed.  Unfortunatley, the crowds aren't there.

    • Jonna, do remember meeting me? I was the Event Coordinator for The BFAE. I would really like to chat with you about get real artists concerns like those for traveling artists, as well as forensically dissecting this event. So many artist came and talked with me, and I would so love to touch base. You could all tell me about the former art group. What happened, can we be better, what can we do. I look forward to your chat!

      • Of course Maureen! I was very impressed because you all came around and actually met us and talked with us, believe it or not, this is unusual.
I'd love to chat. I have another show that I leave for in an hour but soon I'd love to chat. You can also email me. My email is on the review I filled out Sunday.
        • Thanks so much for your reply! Be safe! I hope you have a bang up show with a gross sales off the charts to make up for BFAE. I don't have your email because it went to another committee (complicated)... And for some reason all the artists names were removed from the web site (admin). My email is Maureen.odonnell.hintz@aol.com

I look forward to chatting with you. Have a great show!

Actually you're a little off base.  The group that did the fall show folded.  There were too many conflicts on the board.  (I was on the board.)  The new festival is NEW and result of a 2 of old board who wanted to go in a different direction.

haven't heard unfortunately about the actual show that took place, sorry.  But Buda is a small arts community that doesn't have actual galleries to support the arts  - lots of antiques but but not really much art.

Talked to the lady who was putting together the mid-town show and she said the focus was on high quality all hand-made.  It sounds interesting.

    • Hello Sue,

Thanks for the clarification.  I was going by what I heard through the grapevine.  :)

  • Hi Megan! Just sent you a friend requ

  • This is the first year for the Buda Fine Art Express.  The organizing group used to do a fall show and changed it to the spring.

I know the Mid Town Art in the Park is definitely all hand-made.  A friend of mine has done it before.  She only stopped because she has two little ones and no longer lives in Houston.

Do you still live in GA or are you in TX?  Neither of these shows are huge ones.

    I hope that helps.
