Hello Friends,

Does anyone have any advice for booth setups?  I make flat things (paintings, collages, etc.) so everything goes on a wall of some kind.  I tried grouping things of similar size together to make it look organized, but I worry if it looks too stiff. I also aimed to have open space so people could move freely, but still making the booth look full.

Also-- when you have a good booth setup, do you have any advice for photographing it?

Any suggestions you have, or experiences you want to share will be most welcome.  Thank you!

Danny Darr

  • Hi Danny

Yes, a booth shot can make or break acceptance into a show.  I have seen booth shots worth as much as 30% of the total score on some shows prospecti.  Other shows may even give the booth more weight.  My best advice is Larry Berman, Larry Berman, Larry Berman.  He is hands down the best.  Read his website and his suggestions and hire him to post process your photos.  Larry did all of my jury photos and booth post processing and I am very pleased.

  • I have many articles on the booth image, focusing on how to take your booth picture for jurying:

There's even a page of 26 tips on how to take your booth picture.

I don't know what part of the country you live in but I worked with an artist from the Columbus area who spent the last three days setting up her booth and shooting it when it wasn't snowing. I'll be writing an article about it and how she used a second canopy in front of her Light Dome to block sunlight from entering her booth. She also set the tripod up in the second canopy.

I also have two artists coming to my house on Wednesday to set their booths up for me to photograph. I live in Pittsburgh so the booths will be set up with snow on the ground, which will have to be removed afterwards.

Don't under estimate the importance of a good looking booth picture.

    • Thank you Larry!  I bet a booth image can make or break your chances of getting in a show.  Thank you for your feedback.
