I did one Sugarloaf show and vowed never to do another. My sales were decent considering I used a coupon they sent and it was a first show in that location so it was already discounted. If I had paid full price and got electricity, it would not be worth it. I never met the promoter and found many of the artists in my vicinity to be unfriendly and not helpful. I had a problem with my set up which required more strength than I had. Not a single "can I help you was uttered?". Our room was off the beaten path of the main room and there was no signage directing customers to our room. If it weren't for a few of my customers who directed people to my location, I would have done a lot worse.

Thank you Jaqueline for you feedback. Now I have a very good idea about what kind of show this is and what I can expect.
I regiously did all Sugarloaf shows from their beginnings up to about ten years ago. At this time you could camp on the show grounds to save some expenses and grill hamburgers with fellow exhibitors. Over time they wanted a more classy image with more a.vant- guard exhibits. My sales remained excellent but my country style work didnt fit the new direction. I was kicked out so to speak along with a lot of similar others. I always felt that sales totals reported were way above the facts. Today its a whole different company . I understand from friends that sales totals still seem to be inflated and almost undectable buy- sell work creeping in. It would still be well worth trying if you have the right product.
We used to attend them as a buyer many years ago and had purchased many lovely items over those years. We were one of the ones fooled by Hudson River Inlay..........nice mirror for $575.00, only to find out that it was purchased from a rep and not an artist!.............We stopped going because the shows got stale, it seemed as though the same exhibitors were at every show. When I ventured into this art arena, one year, I exhibited in two of their shows. I can tell you there is definitely buy/sell there. Here is my experience. I was exhibiting across from some Nicaraguan potter who had a decent show. He sold one piece that was $1,300.00. We thought that he was probably buy sell, but did not have proof, so we never said anything to the promoter. At the end of the show when we were packing up, my son had found a box that they had left. He wanted to play with it, so he took out all of the bubble wrap that was in it and guess what he found? A small clay carved vessel that had a made in Nicaragua sticker on the bottom of it............it now resides on my son's shelf in his bedroom.......It really makes me angry to think that that person purchased a $1,300.00 vessel and thinks they bought if from the artist that made it.........I have not participated in any of their shows since. I do believe they are not what they used to be. They have several people selling items in their booths that are mass produced, and I would guess they are made by someone else. I think that as this continues to happen, they will get fewer and fewer "real" artists applying for their shows................
Lida and Jeanne, just for you to understand the economic model of this website -- the shows you see listed are ones where the organizers have paid us to advertise their events to this audience. This site is free to artists, but takes a lot of time and $$ to keep it running, so anything you see on the site that refers to a show (specifically, the Calls for Artists) is something that the show has paid for. Sugarloaf has not advertised here, that is why you aren't seeing the shows here, although they have paid to be added to the list at CallsforArtists.com.
Each of their shows is different because of location, local economy, etc. Is there a particular one you are interested in?

Connie,
I{m looking for a fall art show in the Virginia state area or Minnesota. Do you have any suggestion?
I rather assumed that they paid to advertise, but this was not the only place I checked regarding the various schedule of the shows. I checked their site as well and none is listed for this area this holiday. Maybe next year.
Ive done a few Sugarloaf shows too. They did seem expensive. I did them over 8 yrs ago so Im sure they have changed a lot. I did 'ok' at them but would not recommend traveling far.

Thanks a lot.
Not at the moment, Lida. But keep an eye on www.callsforartists.com because we're going to be listing a lot more for the fall soon.
