Shadowbox source, wood

I’m looking for a source of black shadowboxes, mostly 8 x 10 size. I use them for small scale metal sculptures. I used to get them at Hobby Lobby, where they were reasonably priced, but they stopped carrying the style I liked. Ditto Michael’s.  Now most of the ones they carry have a padded insert, the padding part of which is not removable. The old backs were thick, stable masonite: I sprayed them matte black and then drew on them with colored pencils to accompany the sculpture. Cutting out a new back for these is not going to happen. Plus the black ones are now, not painted wood, but some kind of composite resin or cardboard coated with black vinyl, like contact paper. Very cheesy!  The only real wood ones with plain insert they have now are roughly textured grey barn wood, hardly my thing, even if I painted them black, the texture is all wrong.

Plain, simple, black, real wood, no padding: that’s all I’m asking for. Unfortunately I don't use so many that I can make a real wholesale order, assuming I could find them in the first place. Thanks!

  • Michaels doesn't carry the style I like anymore. I will have to check out IKEA more thoroughly. I did buy a small one to experiment with, but it is not wood, some kind of vinyl coating again. Too shallow too. The old ones I liked have ~ 2 inches clearance inside. The sculptures vary in depth but most have at least an inch and I like to float them off the back on a small piece of foam core. They are not inexpensive either, so a cheesy frame would be a major deterrent to sales.

IKEA has some very nice ones for a minimal cost (from $3.99 and up depending on size). The frames are actually used for photos but they have a deep inset ... i have seen other artists use them for 3D art / shadow boxes. however, if you don't have an IKEA near you, then the price may be a problem because IKEA charges an outrageous amount for shipping. But you can research this on your own or hopefully they have one in your area. Good luck!

Oh, Michaels has them too ... More costly, but if you only need about a dozen pers show and the store is near you / around your regular driving route, you can print coupons online and take 40% to 505 off the price of one to two purchases per day ... This will give you below wholesale prices (when you cinsider shipping) of most online retailers. By the end of a few weeks, you can have 20+ of these frames. Oh, and make sure to get your tax Exempt card so they can omit the tax (for resale). of course, this option is if the IKEA option does not work out for you.

    Good luck.

  • I found out last night my camera is dead, so I won't be able to post a picture of the frames I like.

I knew it was about ready to bite the dust, but I was putting off buying a new one. Now I need advice on purchasing a new point and shoot! I already read the threads here on cameras, but they didn't address the problem I have, which is having to shoot on low light, like in museums that don't allow flash.
  • Thanks. What I'll do is shoot a picture of the good ones tomorrow and upload it.

    Linnea,
I might be able to provide what you need. If you can provide me with a bit more detail and/or sketch/photo of what you want, quantity, and price you were paying. I will work it up and see if we can provide you with a suitable item.
Please e-mail me if interested. kirkparent@comcast.net
In the mean time I will work up a price based on my interpretation of your description of the boxes.
