Re-painting pro-panels?

Hi Everybody,

I am totally a newbie. This is my virgin post!

I've just received my tent in the package and am excited to set everything up to take my first boot shot.

I have some black pro-panels from before when I was doing the mall business (indoor of course). I have 6 knock-downs and 2 full height.

I can't afford to buy more pro-panels at this time so I am thinking about DIY. Meanwhile, I really like artist Kesra Hoffman's booth (see pic). I feel that my black frames would most likely just blend in with my black pro-panels. I really like the neutral gray that makes the art work pop.

My question is, since I am to build some DIYS, should I go ahead and make them gray? And then, spray paint my pro-panels to match? Anybody has luck with that? Or should I just cover the pro-panels with the same fabric? Again, can anybody share their experience regarding apply new fabric to pro-panels?

Any advice is appreciated as some shows that requires a booth shot have them deadline coming in a few days.

Thanks thanks...

Sabrina

  • From the Propanel website:

    Can I replace the covers?
Yes, for standard Pro Panels, but consider selling your old panels and replacing them with new ones. There is a good market for used panels. The cost of a cover is about one-half the cost of a new panel. It takes two people and some strength to take off the old covers and replace them. If you want to sell your used panels, visit our User Forum.

My feel is that painting the carpet is too risky and you run the chance of botching the job. You would probably be better off selling the panels and replacing them with a mesh wall, which be would close to what you could sell the panels for.

    • Hmmm, Mesh walls. they would be so easy for my tiny Scion XB!

      • Someone told me that Flourish is working on a black mesh without holes so it will look more like Pro Panels. Ask them about it if you call.

  • I painted my panels that were the Pine needle green color. I just used a gallon of a 1K acrylic enamel and painted them black, they look great! The paint made the fabric a bit stiff so any velcro adhesion may not work but I dont use any of that. If you dont have a paint gun and a place to paint then its not worth it. Spray cans will not work, you will use a ton of them and it will look streaky because of the small fan pattern on a spray can. Good luck!

    • Hi Steven,
Your works look so nice against the black background. I wish I can just use the black but my frames are all black they won't work. I happen to have a spray gun from my last kitchen cabinet project. So attempted to try!

  • They are carpeted and can't be painted over.

I'd call Pro Panels and ask if you can purchase just the outer carpet, asking them how to change it. I've known artists who had to replace the Styrofoam and were able to pull the carpet over the top.

Or sell your older panels and put the money towards getting a set in the color you want. They usually have about a 50% resale rate.

    • Thank you Larry!
I think you are right, since I really want the gray, I should just let go with the black.
