  • Merry, one thing that you can do ahead of time is make sure everything in your booth that you care about is at least four, if not six inches above the pavement. 2x4 riser blocks, waterproof containers, a couple of tarps for things that must sit behind your booth, A-clamps... These are useful kit items that belong in your boy-scout art-show toolbox. Oh, and a big can of worry-be-gone. The best cure for worry is preparedness. Use that fear for good!
    • Excellent ideas.  I'll pack a tarp in my suitcase as well as my table risers.  I'll buy a plastic container when I'm in NY.
    • I use pieces of 2"x2"x3' wood to keep things off of the ground/pavement/grass.  Put all of your boxes on these chunks of wood so water and mud won't collect under the boxes.  In the SE US, fire ants build nests under boxes, so these pieces of wood encourage them to build their nests elsewhere.

The wood fits anywhere in the vehicle, is cheap and easy to replace.  If you need to use a tarp to keep the rain off of your stuff in the back of your booth, just place the tarp (the blue cheapies from Home Depot, etc.) on top of the sticks, then wrap around your containers.

Rain happens, don't let it get you down.  It's always better than high winds!

      • Thanks for the support.  Never having done a show in the rain before, it does cause me to have some anxiety.  Thanks to you, my anxiety is abating!
      • This weekend, 2x2s wouldn't have been enough at Columbus. My friend Dave Johnson has a print box with 2x2 battens -- carpet glued on the inside came loose after the water in his booth (and ours) came up to the curb and drowned the box. Another artist had a computer get waterlogged.

I would estimate we had about 4" of runoff rain in the back near the gutters. It happens if there's a huge storm. That's why I like 2x4's. 3' is a good length though. You can always stack them if you have enough.

        • I try to never set the back of my booth in a gutter if rain is predicted. Here's a rain storm video from our dot's booth at Cherry Creek-2009. And we were in the "dry" part of the show. Others had it much worse. Also there were 3 of us working to rearrange things.

Where gutters came together the water rose 2' and higher in some booths. Stuff stored in the gutter was either swept away or caused a dam that back up water into booths.

Not all rain storms are this bad but.....rain happens, one needs to be prepared. And summer rains are often a big dump like in this video.

  • Have a good canopy. And plan on rain....its happening everywhere.
    • Not in Tucson.   Just lots of smoke from the fires, rain would be nice.
      • I would be happy to send you some of our rain from Seattle!!!
        • I don't think I could live in Seattle due to all that rain, though there are times especially in the summer that you pray for rain here at least to get rid of the incessant heat.   So please send us rain in July when our rains are supposed to come!
