I was accepted to the Piccolo Spoleto Craft show in Charleston.  Their show is two weekends, and I have the first weekend show (Memorial Day weekend).  I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this show operator or this show in particular?  Overall sales, etc?  It seems there are multiple art shows over these weekends by other promoters around the city.  So I'm trying to get a experience perspective . . . Thanks.

  • Carry a garden watering can and have lots of water to keep the dust down. The grounds are some sort of crushed shells and soft black dirt with the consistency of talcum powder that gets into everything. Photography is a hard sell there and it's too late to back out without losing the booth fee, otherwise I would have said don't do it. Have some low price points and keep your fingers crossed that you don't lose your shorts.

Make sure your framed pieces are all sealed or you'll be taking everything apart to get rid of dust infiltration, and likewise for your bagged pieces. Under moderate wind conditions when I was there, anything on my white folding table would show a clear ring around where that blasted dust would settle after only 15-20 minutes. I had to lay my Propanels on my driveway and run a vacuum cleaner over them to get the dust out. And my panels are dark gray to begin with. There is no grass or ground cover on the show site, so nothing keeps that infernal dust in place. For a multitude of reasons, I won't do that show again.

Do a search for Piccolo Spoke on the site here and you'll find more details on the show. Good luck!

    • You mention dust. And that's a bane of our existence sometimes. But last year I had a neighbor who all but eliminated it around the front of his booth.

      Snow melt crystals.

Yup, those little white calcium chloride crystals keep the dust down! He sprinkles them around in front of his booth and they moisturize the ground.

I have 2 shows this year that may have a dust problem, so guess what I got an extra bag of this winter?
