I do photography and have wondered why are we about the only people that do art fairs that do not have to produce their own work?

Currently I am doing all of my own printing but at times have had some pieces printed by a third party and I know of photographers that use COSTCO for the source of  their prints.

  • Define "produce".

I do all my own work but have never owned a printer. I've never considered printing part of photography. Until digital came along, I only shot transparency film which could easily be visually duplicated when printed. With digital, I create the digital file that, when any modification is turned off wherever it's printed, matches my digital file. All that is required in photography is to supervise the printing, which I do.

Speaking of Costco. I wrote an article on using the Fuji Frontier printer at Costco for Shutterbug magazine years ago and got Ethan Hansen to collaborate. Ethan owns Dry Creek Photo and provides color profiles for any printer if you do a test print of his file and submit it. Because of that article, Dry Creek Photo got a contract to profile all the printers at Costco on an annual basis. You could download profiles for specific printers at any store from his web site. Costco has since changed their printers to inkjet so I don't know if that relationship still exists.
