I'm overwhelmed w/information regarding PCI compliance and credit cards!  I've only taken credit cards for a year and use a 'knucklebuster' @ approx $30/month.  I just got hit w/ the PCI fee and was wondering if the Square or Intuit are PCI compliant or charge this fee?   I haven't found a definite answer

  • The rumors abound regarding square and it is basically due to the fact that they are single handedly  killing the merchant account as it has been know for decades. Remember all the rumors about PayPal at it's inception? Here is a little about Square's security. There is no PCI compliance fee.

  • Yep, like Michael said. That's your definite answer.

    • Thanks Jay-  just making sure if I make the switch that i won't get any surprises

  • I have been using the Square for 18 months and no PCI Compliance fees.

    • Thanks Michael- Some fellow artists told me last year and I couldn't find it specifically listed as a fee on the Squareup site, but had heard somewhere that Square was no longer PCI compliant and they were implementing the fee.  I'm trying to decide if it's cheaper for me to upgrade my phone plan (I don't currently have data) and get a Square or Intuit or stay 'as is.'  May I ask:

Do you like the Square?  Have you had any problems so far?  There are NO monthly fees, right?   I cringe every time I get the statement from Merchant Warehouse! :-)

      • Yes, I like the Square.  There is no harm in trying it as it is 100% free until you swipe a card and then you know exactly what you are paying.  Exactly, nothing hidden or added or surprises.  You can use it 1 time and then never again and all you would pay is the 2.75% of the charge.  Just try it and see.

      • Hi Marcie,

I was using Merchant Warehouse last year, until we switched to both the square ( for my husband's business) and 1st National BAnk, for my sales.  1st National BAnk didn't out for me...hidden fees, too many problems with swiping, etc so I have since switched to square.  Square doesn't charge more for swiping rewards cards or have PCI compliance fees according to the email we received just a couple of days ago. Also, looking back at all my husbands transactions, that is the truth.  Also, square gets the money in your account faster than 1st National.   The biggest downside to square that I can see, is that there isn't a 24/7 hotline you can call if you have an issue.  You can email them and it takes a day or two to hear back.  But, on the other hand, my husband has used the square for almost a year and never had an issue with receiving payments.  Square does charge more for a keyed in card as opposed to swiped but they all do that I think.

        Good luck!  Amy

        • Thanks so much Amy-
