I walked this show a couple of years ago when it was brand new. Very, very local displaying artists, much in the way of student work from the local high schools, a few mid-level craft booths, a handful of sponsor booths. I seem to recall prize money -- at least there were ribbons -- and some nice work inside the building, but I don't think this show ever really got off the ground.
The Art League in Palm Coast is working toward an art center. A great place to try out a new booth setup, the "park" is picturesque. Keep in mind that Palm Coast has one of the highest foreclosure rates in Florida -- to the point that there are real estate offices set up to handle ONLY foreclosures and short sales. I hate to be negative, but . . . I'd give it some thought.
I decided to do this show. Like I said, it will be a way to do 2 days of bird photography, plus lead a workshop, in the area. And as a bonus, my brother and his wife flew down to spend a week so I'll get to see them before the show and workshop on Thursday. Sounds like it was meant to be. ;-)
I'll be at Springtime Tallahassee or I'd stop by to say Hi, but best wishes for a fantastic weekend. Actually, any time spent with family is time well spent. Weather is supposed to be superb . . .
Haven't written a review yet, and may not. It was an attendance disaster (less than 2,000) and I was happy to (barely) make expenses. when you count in hotel stay, booth fee, and (most irritatingly) the $25 temporary license that the show "required" in their acceptance letter, but did not enforce. (So if you brought it up or just played by the rules, you paid $25 more than someone who ignored it.)
The show was at the City Marketplace shopping center, which isn't that easy to find, sitting as it does in a secluded road behind the Wal-Mart (which is where my GPS took me). Although there were signs posted, there weren't very many. They had a flashing Dept of Transportation sign, at least on Sunday, which was a great idea. Except that, inexplicably, it flashed "Special Event." Which meant that if you already KNEW there was an art show happening, you'd pull in. But if you didn't, you didn't read anything in the message that would tempt you to drive in.
The best artwork was in the Art League HQ--Liz (the director) said they'd moved into a number of spaces on the second level, on a 3-year lease. The artwork outside was mediocre at best--several fine 2-D artists (one of whom won "best in show") two photographers (me and another guy, and--again inexplicably--they put us directly across from each other) and mostly buy/sell vendors and show sponsors. Less than 40 tents in all. It looked like the outdoor art festival world either didn't know about the show, or stayed far away. To the not-so-buying public who attended, we were a pleasant diversion while they listened to live music. I'll bet most of them spent more time upstairs at the indoor exhibits than strolling the schlock outside. I know that I would have--and my brother and sister in law, who visited from PA, spent much more time there, too. My sister in law--who has been CEO of several non-profit orgs--asked me: "Why don't they just have this as a show for the art league members and leave it at that? " A great question.
Anyway, hope you had a great weekend! At least I covered expenses, got some fine shots at St. Augustine Alligator Farm, and spent quality time with my bro/sis-in-law. Can't put a price tag on THAT!
Oh, Geoff, I am so sorry -- but at least the weekend wasn't a total loss. I suppose it is no comfort that Tallahassee was no better -- I can't believe how far that show has deteriorated!
The Palm Coast Art League is interested in bringing the arts to the community, but it seems to me that they are focused on High School and theater. My take was that they not only didn't know how to organize an art show, they weren't really interested in doing so. I thought I remembered ribbons/awards, though.
If you're in the area again I have high hopes for the upcoming Sawgrass event in a couple of weeks. If not, happy travels!
Geez, Tallahassee bombed too? What's goin' on with the northern part of FL, anyway? I've never made a dime up here.
Anyway: As a matter of fact, I WILL be at Sawgrass. My check got cashed Friday; I got a rather breathless acceptance letter late last night. (Is it just me, or does anyone else think the acceptance letter should go out first...just askin'.) Anyway, I will see you there!
Nice comment, Lin--you should be writing show reviews! ;-)
I appreciate the feedback. This show attracted me because I usually take a few days off to shoot in St. Augustine this time of year anyway, so it would kinda be a paid vacation more than a paycheck show. I'll let you know what I decide to do. Thanks again!

I'll write a review next week.
