Hello All, I'm about to apply for a tent show (my first), and the big question de jour is whether there is advantage to one category over another from the perspective of
a. getting into a good show
b. getting awards
c. selling my art!
I create sculptural pieces that hang on the wall. The surface is decorated in collage (paper, fabric, paint...) Mixed media or Sculpture? Does it even matter? My thinking is that I don't want to be judged against other pieces in a much higher price bracket (bronze etc.)
I'm all ears!

Welcome to our world, Amy!
There are very few artists who do these shows who depend on winning the awards to support themselves. Sure, aim for them, but the competition is stiff. I'm with Larry, what do you consider the work? Statistically speaking there is less competition in the sculpture category than in MM, so if you can look at the work and create with that in mind it ups your chances for acceptance.
Thank you Connie, it's nice to be here! There is such a wealth of information, and nice folks. It makes my decision to pursue these shows just a little bit less scary. We reside in Florida, so I am going to start out this winter/ spring with one or two close to home.
Thank you Larry for the links!
Thanx for replying. My work is strong, my booth slide- non existent. I have hoped to find examples and suggestions of how to shoot a tent. I'm sure there in here somewhere. This site is simply amazing. I own a 10 x 10 white exhibit tent with zip up sides. I own a great camera, and know how to use it. I guess I'll have to pretend I'm at a show for the first go'round.
As to the awards, I figure that serious collectors might prefer purchasing a winning piece. This is consistent with what I believe I have observed. I also feel that it might be of value to put various awards on my resume.
I have some examples and many articles on the booth picture:

Howard Alan has example booth pictures by medium on his web site:

In general, mixed media gets more applications than sculpture. But you should apply where you fit best, because some show directors will recatagorize your application. Most artists don't think about getting awards because sales are usually what it's about. As for getting into good shows, how strong is your work and how good are your jury images and booth slide?
