Hi, this is my first post on this forum. I've been reading all the helpful posts for a long time, and I appreciate the help. This is my first year in the art fair business, and I've done two shows so far this summer-- Moab, UT and Logan, UT. I am a large format landscape photographer, and my work is really more for the "high end" crowd, and neither show that I did was quite the right audience. Everyone loved my work, but just couldn't afford it. The majority of my photographs are from Southern Utah (and I live near Salt Lake City).

I'm trying to figure out the best shows to do that will be right for my work, and so at the last minute I am thinking of doing the Aspen, CO show in a couple weeks. I've been accepted, but I'm trying to make a smart decision. I'd like to avoid wasting more money if possible, as it's a 6 hour drive from here and with the booth fee, gas, trailer rental, hotel, etc. my expenses will be much higher than they've been for my first two shows.

Obviously, everyone's experiences will be different, but any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. (I've read everything on here about Aspen, but anything additional would help.)

1) I've seen reports that 50,000 people go to this show. Do you think this is anywhere near accurate? Is it typically a serious buying crowd?

2) What kind of people are going to the show -- locals, or mostly tourists?

3) How is Howard Alan Events to work with? I've read some pretty negative reviews of their shows and would like some more opinions. I'm signed up to do another of his shows in Park City (a week after Aspen), but I have no experience with his shows yet.

Thanks a lot for your help!

  • I did Aspen last year. It was hot, hot hot. People go to the mountains to get cool in the summer and if it's hot they go to air conditioning. Those that do come looked like drowned kittens and just zombie through with the mantra " it's so hot". Lodging is expensive. We stayed in Snowmass Village. The show is totally dollied in, be prepared. I was going to give it a shot this year, but hubby said no mountains this year. I still wished I pushed it though since I would like to see how it goes if it is not 100degrees.
