New Member

Hello.  My name is Julie and I'm new to the group.  I found this site while searching online for area show information.  My husband Jason & I are relatively new to arts & craft shows.  Our first "real" show was Labor Day 2009 at the Royal Craft Show at Castle Farms in Charlevoix, MI.  (FYI:  It's a very nice, well organized, juried show!)

Our medium is gourd art.  Our work includes birdhouses, bowls, vases, sculpture, masks, oil candles, night lights, ornaments & garden decor all made from gourd.  We grow and dry as many gourds as possible (although some years that's difficult in Northern Michigan!)  My parents (retired farmers) grow gourds for us too.

We started our little gourd endeavor (Pillywiggins Garden) last year and it has taken off better than we ever expected.  We're still trying to work out the kinks for show displays and we love to learn new techniques, tips & tricks.  I look forward to swapping info and sharing ideas with the group!

  • Hi Julie,
Welcome. I live in Pittsburgh, Pa and create handcrafted jewelry. I have found so many wonderful resources on this site and I know you will too. I checked out you work and it is amazing. Good luck to you.
  • Hi Julie, Welcome to you and your husband Jason. I'm also from Michigan...but further south. I went to your page and viewed your pictures. Wow, what an awesome job you do working with your gourds. I'm sure you will find a lot of information here that will be helpful to your needs and look forward to learning from your experience. Thanks for joining us. Have a great week.

    • Wow, you are further south by a long shot! We are just north of the 45th parallel. Do you use Facebook? I have many more photos posted to our Pillywiggins Garden Facebook page. (We're still working at getting a full website up & running.) I like your tie quilt. Is that a wall hanging or full size?

I hope you have a good week too. My husband & I still work full time jobs. He is a landscaper so at least he can still be creative. Me, I'm a bookkeeper (office manager for a construction company). Creativity in bookkeeping is frowned upon. LOL Sometimes it's so hard to sit at a desk when you really want to be working in your studio! Ours is lovingly referred to as the "Gourd Dungeon". :D
      • Thanks for the compliment on my tie quilt...it is afghen size...good for cuddling on the couch and watching a good movie. I am on Facebook so I will look you up and see the photos you have displayed there. A friend of mine who is no longer with us..used to work with gourds. I have several that she painted that I just love. Three of them have music boxes added to them. I work just two days in our local Christian Book Store and am a new Grandma...but like you love to be working on my projects and being creative...it's so much fun.
