Once again I get my annual rejection from those guys. My new work wasn't coming together and the deadline was looming, so on the last day in goes the old work, polished, organized, and wordsmithed the best I can. No surprise, the rejection note comes back today.
What's interesting, in a train wreck sort of way, are the juror scores. It would have been kind of nice considering the wide variance on the scores, if a little bone or two was tossed my way explaining why the low scores were so gosh-awful. The scores were running;
Juror 1: , 2
Juror 2: , 5
Juror 3: , 1
Juror 4: , 4
The scores are on a 1-7 continuum, and obviously they include the middle range unlike many who drop the 4 out.
I know I don't have colorful eyeball searing work, but sheesh, I expected a little consistency in there. Call it bi-modal distribution if you will, for the math inclined, and that's never a good sign the jurors are on a similar wavelength. That "1" still stings though, and makes me wonder what the devil they're looking for.

This must be the same juror #3 that they had at Des Moines, or was it Ft Worth, who gave everyone a low score? They must have remembered me from 20 years ago when I last did Madison because I got in.
I can't know why you don't get in, but, I have an opinion. I am warning you, though. If you want me to critic your work be prepared for my honesty. And before any of you go off crying because of what I might say, 1)this will be my opinion and my opinion only and 2) I have no idea why you got rejected. It's will be just a casual observation based on your pieces in your AFI slide show.
I will take you up on your offer, and I assure you I have a thick skin. It'll be a moot point on giving a critique on the current posted work as I don't use those for jury purposes, and I can tell pretty much why I'm not getting in the biggie shows. Most of the shots in the slideshow are trial runs with a few generating sales, but most aren't. I'm a lot more interested in getting serious feedback on this new direction I'm going in with images and text. Give me another few days, and I'll have enough of those to make it worthwhile.
Robert,
I'll look at them if you want. I'd be curious to see your stuff in general.
The timeline on those has slipped terribly, but they will be done soon.
I didn't know Madison AFontheS gave out jury scores. Can someone please tell me where the scores are disclosed? I did not see them in my notification e-mail.
They're at the bottom of your email from them.
Yes: scores sent only to the rejected. But with no information on the cut off points per medium, so not all THAT helpful, except as a locus of discontent. We were all were dissed by Juror # 3, to a greater or lesser extent.
Agreed. A cut-off score would be useful information. To their credit though, in giving out the juror scores, they are providing more data than most shows. Also, unlike many other shows, their wait list procedure is well-documented and transparent. If you're ever on their wait list, you'll know where you stand.
I fortunately got into Madison, but would like to have seen a score as well. Since I am new and still learning.
