Hi everyone Another question. I read on Larry Berman's site that many art fairs will allow you to jury in as an emerging artist. I have been unable to find any information on the Zapp site with regards to this. I plan on starting the art fair circuit in Michigan in 2013, with possibly adding Indiana, Ohio and Illinois, depending on where. I do know that the East Lansing Art Fair accepts emerging artists with no booth shot required. Is anyone aware of other shows in my area that would accept me without booth photos as an emerging artist? I do have a brand new EZ Up, and plan to get the flourish mesh panels with sta-bars, etc., however I may not be able to accomplish this before the snow flies here. Many of the shows have very early deadlines, so I could really use some advice. Thanks!

  • Right, they won't turn you down. But definitely a call beforehand is a good idea, and make it MANY days before the deadline. Things get very hectic at deadline time and you want to be able to get to the right person to get an answer.

    • Thanks, Larry and Connie! Being new to this whole thing, I wasn't sure how to approach the problem. Is it best to email, or would a phone call be more in order? First on my list for 2013 is the East Lansing Art Fair. I do know that they have an emerging artist category, but when I pulled up the Zapp application, there was no place to designate the category. Sorry for all the questions, but I'd like to do this right.

      Appreciate the input!
      • Shows on ZAPP only have it listed as a category if they offer that category without you having to ask. For shows not listing emerging artist as a category you need to contact the show. I always prefer the telephone to e-mail because it can fully answer your questions.

I would think that if a show doesn't offer an emerging artist category, you would apply in your actual category with either an additional artwork image or an image of a grouping of your work as the booth image. If that's what they tell you to do, when uploading that image, select the box for the booth image. Otherwise you won't be able to add it to an application as a booth which will leave you wondering why you can't complete the application.

  • Most shows doing the emerging artist category have residency requirements, except maybe Cherry Creek.

Columbus has an emerging artist category but I think it's within certain counties.

But, you can always call the art show and ask how they want you to handle the booth picture if you've never done a show. Some may just ask for an additional art image, called the booth in your profile so it can be attached to the application. Some may ask for a grouping of your artwork.

I can't believe in this economy a show would actually turn down a jury fee from an artist that has no experience willing to apply.
