I have a bunch of square pieces and I know the image size for Zapp is 1920x1920. I cropped these so there is black on all four sides...is that wrong? I was not sure if the image should fill the entire 1920x1920 space....Thanks for your help!
Yes it's properly formatted but it has three problems and can be significantly improved.
First problem is that the image is smaller than 1600 pixels square which means your images will be approximately 20% smaller than your competition's images both projected or viewed on monitors. The second problem is that you don't have an embedded sRGB color space tag so your image will appear dull and possibly washed out. The third problem is that you signed the painting before photographing it and didn't take your name off. So far there are two shows that I know of, one being Uptown, that reject images of paintings that are signed. I don't remember the name of the other show. I recommend taking all identification off paintings and especially never apply to a show with your name visible in your booth.

Because there are shows starting to kick back applications if they can read the artist's name on the artwork. Uptown has been doing that for the past three years, and each year, I get panic calls from artists who need their names taken off their paintings before they can complete the application. And it's always in the last 48 hours that they do this. Now I regularly take name off all images of paintings that I work on for artists.
I've even had to take a potter's logo off all his pots when Uptown kicked his application back. And that logo was an integral part of the design.

No, I understand about the histogram...I am definitely not a product photographer and am kind of winging it here the best I can. I have no budget for hiring someone to do this for me so I am trying to do the best I can with my limited skills...

Thanks Larry for your suggestions and for the rework....So, are you saying that I should get rid of the black border on the square image so it projects larger? I can photoshop out my signature and I will attach the srgb tag...I thought it was already tagged that way, but I guess not!

Hi Jill,
It's actually converting to the sRGB color space and make sure the tag goes along with the JPEG. In the Save For Web or Save As dialogue, make sure the ICC profile box is checked.
What was your reasoning for the large black borders? If it was to actually add borders to the image, it doesn't work because the black isn't seen by the jurors so your image comes across too small.

Ohhhhh....I thought all the images for Zapp were supposed to have black borders on the sides....SO when I had a square, I thought I had to put the black on all sides, instead of just the left/right...

Actually the concept (originally my concept) was to add black borders to non square images so both horizontal and verticals displayed at the same size. Otherwise horizontals displayed at 1/3 larger than verticals because monitors and digital projectors are horizontal in format.

I see Zapp has dropped the black border requirement now---1920 pixels on the longest side is all they require. Something about the new viewing technology... why is this? What is the difference with the new technology?
