I'm getting my feet wet by trying to sell some matted prints at some local holiday bazaars/art fairs in the next month or so. I'v got photo notecards boxed, and want to add to it by having some photography matted and in plastic sleeves. I'll be buying pre-cut matts. My question is, is this foam core OR mat backing really necessary? I find that when I buy frames, they already have some backing that doesn't often allow for that thick foam core. I'm thinking of simply hinge taping a piece of card stock (I work in printing so have access to paper) to the back of the matted photo and sleeving that. I'm aware of the whole 'archival' issues with fine art photography, but don't feel I'm ready for that in terms of location, audience, pricing etc.
Thoughts?

I wouldn't recommend using anything thinner than standard mat board which I think is considered 4 ply. A great many people who purchase unframed art never frame it and it'll sit in a drawer for years. you wouldn't want it to get damaged.
For matted outer size 22x28 prints, I use two sheets of mat board as a backing or stiffener in the clear bag. Single for outer mat size 16x20 or smaller.
