Has anyone used or using the iPhone for processing? I hear some people mention using the iPhone for credit card processing. Is this a reliable way to process and what about printing reciepts? or Can someone reccommend a good machine to use?

For the 2nd year, I've been using to iPhone apps on my iPhone 3GS. The two apps are 1) iPay POS; and 2) Swipe. I use one or the other, with one being my backup if something goes awry (which it never has). I use a swipe device sold by one of the venders that is basically a cup that fits on the bottom of the iPhone. Receipts are provided via email or via remote printer (LAN/WAN). Again, an effective if not a more complex solution. This year I will be using an iPad as alternative since I have big thumbs and I will be using the RingitUp Pro application along with it (there is seamless integration between RingitUp and both CC apps). Both applications have either a free trial period or test mode and you can purchase them with a no per transaction fee option (for the app).
For the provider, I use Pay Pals payment pro services. The rates are decent and the access to funds varies a bit, but in most instances immediate to your PayPal account. Many other providers for clearing your payments are also options for both of these applications.
For the price (free or near free), try them out and see what you think! I've had very good success and to date no failures with them.
I'm jumping on this thread late. A player in this space that should be considered is MerchantAnywhere . They have a swipe machine that can connect directly with any cellphone (well almost any). They are currently waiting for Apple's approval. It works with any other phone make. The device is small and compact; it can attach to you belt and then to your iphone. Here's an image of the swipe with the Android Cheers, LC
I could not care what processor one uses for credit cards; To "Yell from the rooftops" about incomplete information is wrong. 1.7% rates are misleading and everyone needs to realize that there are the higher rates that apply 3.7% for the rewards cards. And Commerce was the only one who educated me with their free primer of info. Everyone should educate themselves on the many different charges there are ,before paying . All the companies list their deals on the internet.
Crazy Fees -- annual fee, monthly statement fee, monthly minimum fee, batch fee, transaction fee, Pin- based debit transaction fee, check verification fee, Internet gateway set-up fee, Monthly gateway fee, Voice authorization fee,Wireless fee, Equipement leasing or purchase fee, PCI fee, Reserves, expanded data program for phone . Noone pays all these fees ,but do you pay any of these fees??
I first blogged on this in june after my own research, which was added to by many members here. My comment about still blogging this topic is the amount of calls on the same subject without going back to the archives on past blogs of credit cards & I-Phones- We sure look at past reviews on shows,, so why not the other topics too- or just do your own research-
And Chris- I don't need to be called out for giving solid, truthful, and correct information ; especially when fellow artists think that they only pay one rate (1.7%) - that is misleading and partial information. No body is an expert, but I have tested the square(2.75% t15 cents) they have kept it simple without other fees; and the morphie on gopayment- new competitive rates may be coming .
I popped back on here after I saw misleading and incomplete info- my position as an educator has been to educate ; and alot of my information came from a single source, others experiences, and my own experiences; I have not taken and do not want any referrals $$- I just would like my fellow artists to be smart and not be easily ripped off. Educated:
And all I have is rewards-nofee cards- doesn"t cost me more to charge on them and I get something back- 75,000 points = $750 check that was just deposited.
To date myself- Ah -I remember calling my charges in on a bag phone the size of a briefcase- 1978-79-- and takin that pile of slips to the bank.

Crazy Fees -- annual fee, Nope. monthly statement fee, $5.00 monthly minimum fee, I dunno as I always have sales every month. batch fee, Nope. transaction fee, 25 cents Pin- based debit transaction fee, Nope. check verification fee, Nope. Internet gateway set-up fee, Nope Monthly gateway fee, Nope Voice authorization fee, Nope. Wireless fee, Nope. Equipement leasing or purchase fee, I bought my Nurit in 1993. PCI fee, Yeah. Reserves, Nope. expanded data program for phone . Nope.
And I too had a bag phone in 1994 attached to my Tranz 420. I wish I still had that thing as it was a powerful phone!
But hey, we just got cable strung down the road last year, and cell phone service about the same time.
And I like only having one credit card, and I would like to get rid of that too! Dave Ramsey is my hero!
OK, Chris, you won me over with the Dave Ramsey comment (he's my hero, too). So, who is your processor/gateway/whatever you call it. I've done Store and Forward forever and only been burned once, but it would be nice to have instant verification. I tried Square, but recently did a show inside a metal building and had no phone service (had to go back to the knuckle buster and key in later).
Share the info -- great service companies need to be recognized!

We have the iphone swipe device and have been very pleased with how it functions and our customers have been as well.
Our % fee was reduced due to being able to swipe the card as opposed to keying in the info. The ability to email a receipt is a bonus as well.
Considering 80% of our sales are by credit card - it has been well worth it to have this option available to our customers (and has definitely closed sales that would not have closed otherwise - if we only took cash or check).
Understanding there is going to be processing fees - and they will very by card - we're ok with that.
OH MY// Indeed a 1.7% rate for qualified cards- straight non reward cards- DO U HAVE ANY NO REWARD CARDS IN YOUR WALLET???? there is a mid qualified rate and a NON- QUALIFIED RATE- REWARDS CARDS- 3.7% &34 cents-gopayment- You don't really know what card u get-debit is the least, but it is quick and in your face- BEST READ YOUR AGREEMENT// I am too busy to list all the crazy fees//- see the FREE primer of COMMON SENSE CREDIT CARD KNOWLEDGE--Commerce Payment Systems- They even pay u to have them as your processor//

DO I REALLY HAVE TO KEEP REPEATING THIS BLOG//
Actually, no. You are no more of an expert in this than I am. And I'm definitely no expert.
I know all about qualified, mid qualified and non qualified cards as I have been taking plastic since 1984 when we had to take the slips to the bank and deposit them and wait a week for the money.
Everybody has their processor and a great majority really have no problems with them. I have been with my processor since 1994. My contract expired in 1996 and I'm free to change anytime I wish. But I see no reason to change. But I also do NOT yell from the rooftops that everybody should use MY processor! I have never even said who my processor is.
You have your processor and that's fine. But why do you feel you must tell others who they should use? You're sounding like a shill for the company.
And no, I have no reward cards in my wallet. I have one credit card as that's all I need.
Is there a "store and forward" feature if there is not cell signal? I have ATT and some areas in GA. are completely "dead zones". Also my wireless is Sprint and it doesn't get signal so I have to use the store and forward.
