Introducing myself

Thanks Connie for the feedback, comments and suggestions for places to visit here on the Art Fair Insiders.

I joined because I am considering selling my work at art fairs and felt Art Fair Insiders would be a good place to do research and such regarding that. I have made no commitments either way at this point. I tried to sell my work at only one art fair back in the 1970s and did not feel it was successful (albeit it was only one rather meager and lame attempt). I have been associated with  a couple art fairs, but from the organizational side. Being a musician I have played at a few too, but those experiences are not very much benefit in terms information about selling art. I have been in a couple studio tours as both artist and organizer and some of those experiences help some, but... for me, the more information the better.

For the past four or five years Wendy (my wife) and I have spent the winters in SW USA, taking about a month getting there and another month getting back to the Seattle area where our main home is. I thought art fairs could potentially nicely fit into our travel plans as well.

Most of my art so far has been primarily photography based, silver gelatin fine art which I generally sold through art reps. I no longer have a dark room and have converted most of my new works to some sort of digital process, generally producing my own prints. My newer digital photography and prints work I have not marketed and probably would not use the art fair process for doing that.

About a year ago I started making paintings from my photographs and it is those that I am looking for new markets for, one of which I thought might be art fairs.

If you would like to see the kinds of art I (and Wendy my wife) have done over the years samples can be found on our web pages at www.HamptonStudios.com

Sincerely,

Wally Hampton

  • Welcome, Wally. Sounds like life has been interesting for you working in music and traditional darkroom. It is a great life! It is always exciting to find people entering into the art fairs and the ones who have the most success (to my mind) these days are those who have spent many years exploring and developing ideas and skills. Since it seems you like to travel here is one of the best things, if you start a business doing the shows your travel becomes a tax deduction. I'll bet you knew that!

I look forward to seeing you at a show one day.

  • Hi Wally and welcome to AFI :)   Love your paintings!
