Hi, for the pros, I just want to know if its better to buy the insurance premium being reccommended by jazzfest ($140) for 3 days,  or to seek my own insurance. It is a requirement for participation in the festival. Thanks

Harrison.

  • For those of you with RLI, which product are you buying?  Also, have you ever had to file a claim?  If so, how did that go?

    Thanks,
    Dow

  • $140 for one show? That's as much of a ripoff as  buying the insurance from rental car companies when you rent a car! I have a business policy from State Farm for $175 a year that includes $1M liability. Check first with your homeowners insurance company to see if they'll write a business policy. It's not a bad idea to have your own policy anyway for all your shows - cheap insurance if someone get hurt in your booth.

  • Definitely check with RLI- I am with them now, and for an entire year, my premium is under $200.00 annually.

I did one show where I purchased their insurance, as I did not have my own, it cost me an extra $100.00, it was a week long show, and covered all theft, fire, injury, loss of property etc., but was quite pricey. I went with RLI, because it covers me at my home studio, travelling in my vehicle, and at shows. It's a great deal.

  • Does anybody know what is covered for $140?

  • Yes that one was a first for me.  I was in insurance in a previous life and minimum annual premiums can be an issue but $140 for 4 days sounds pretty strong, so I am going to shop around.

  • I pay $281 for a full year's coverage with RLI. And they'll add the promoter to the list. And since I do so many shows, it's nice to know I'm covered whether or not it's a requirement.

    • Thanks Chris, I will look into that insurance company, and also shop around. I guess it will be more beneficial to have a yearly coverage that a few days.

  • I'd check around. $140 for one event is a lot.
