Illinois Tollway unfair!

I missed a couple of Illinois tollway stops.....one for $1.50 (6/5/11)and another for $.50 (6/3\11).....so as per the rules, I  sent in $2.00 (6/6\11) with complete documentation within 7 days which is allowed by the rules.....three weeks later they sent me a photo of my car and said they did not get the money and that I now owed $67.00.....I called and told them I had paid , but they did not believe it, so per their instructions and then sent them a photo copy of the $2.00 payment.....now they called again and said they got the $2.00 photo copy proof and the actual check....but can only apply it to either the $1.50 missed toll or the $.50 missed toll....not both......so I now have to pay a $21.00 fine.

Any suggestions on how to deal with the Illinois Tollway?

Gee.....yet another reason to not do art shows in Illinois......we are not all good here in Wisconsin.....but if a public agency did this in Wisconsin....the public would be outraged......and people in such an agency who made this policy would be fired or at least redirected ....and the people would demand that the politicians discipline such  agency policy makers.....I know......I worked as a department head for a county agency in Wisconsin for 22 years.

  • Dave,  If you buy one of those passes, you actually pay less on the fines.  You end up recieving a little bit of a discount.  Plus, you will save time by not having to sit in line to pay your tolls.

    • I dont go often enough to justify getting a pass......this year I went twice.....and will not be going again
      • I mean't to say you pay less on the tolls.  Dave if you got one, they don't expire.  They last from year to year.

  • Dave, my husband and I missed one of those toll booths in Illinois.  We didn't know what to do.  My sister said it happened to her and she did nothing and never heard from them.  Well, we did.  We also got a photo of our car and a bill for $60.  We now have one of those EZ passes.  You can get one on the internet.  Most of them are good in several states.  You can add money to it right on line and check your account right from home.  Those toll booths are a little misleading in the upper part of Illinois.  I know how it happened that you missed it.  The other states toll booths don't seem so misleading.  Start looking for a pass.  They can be called Izoom, EZ pass, etc.  You attach the pass to your windshield and never have to think about it except to add money to it.

  • I get the part of the toll, it happened to me couple weeks ago, I didn't have change for the toll and I was setting up for a show so I passed the toll without paying the dollar back and forth. You can go online and pay within 7 days so I thought, I will be fine. I remembered exactly the 7th day so when I tried to do it on a Sunday I wasn't able to. I called Monday and they told me it was to late so that cost me 60.00 dlls each toll. Total of 120.00. So now I know better. I have to get my pass or drive with change on me. I know that trying to talk to a human on the phone is impossible and once you do they are basically useless.

The part that I don't understand is "Another reason not to do shows in IL" . Kind of apples and pears.

    • Dave,

I hate to pay fines! What a waste of my hard earned money. Please, read those huge signs that the tollroads plaster all over the highway about which lane to be in for "$" or "I-Pass". After you go through one, they are all the same. The right lanes are money only; the left lanes are for I-Pass holders.

Dan and I thought it was a bit hair-raising to slow down, squeeze in to those cubicles to pay an unknown amount and then face a mini Indy 500 as everyone guns their cars leaving to try to make up time.

      Crazy, hey?

We bought an I-Pass. You just cruise right through. I little bit of work saves you lots of trouble.

I hope you don't give up.

      Good Luck!

  • There must be a TV station in Chicago land that would love to run a 30 second clip on this.  TV loves it when  state governments do crap like this.  There must be a consumer affairs desk at one of the TV stations that will love to hear from you.

As far as the IL tollway goes, they have a bunch of coin toss exits only but there is a sign that directs to you a website where you can pay the toll if you don't have exact change or any change at all.  You didn't even have to go to the bother of mailing a check.

  • Just a quick reply regarding the I-Pass/EZ Pass - I've used it to drive from Illinois (where I live) east - it works everywhere along the way...I thought except Ohio, but if they've picked it up (as per Larry), I will be thrilled. It makes things SO much easier. Working in MA, PA, ME, NH...you name it.

Also, as an IL resident, I have to say I'm (unfortunately) not remotely surprised you got this kind of response. There are no people I've talked to from the state that are remotely capable of making a decision that is outside what is in their training materials. So sorry.

    • You'd think, having a  good state job with benefits would make state employees happy! Instead, they behave as if they hated every second of it.
    • Elizabeth, I used my IPAss in Ohio last year.
