I built a new set of display shelves for my sculpted boxes and finally had decent enough good weather to paint them and set up the tent and take some photos.

Any input is much appreciated and most certainly needed.

  • Greg, I like the stone look on the shelves.  I sort of think it punches up the white a tiny bit.  Your boxes look very nice.

  • I think you might consider merchandising these better than just having them all lined up on shelves in a row and stacked one on top of the other. You are trying to sell the idea of your booth to a jury, and once at a show you're looking for customers to be attracted to it as well. Sometimes dressing things up a bit to give it all more class makes people think they're gonna be awfully expensive and then they won't even look. But I don't think you'll get too many whistling gofers in your booth if you follow some decorator's advice who understands merchandising. Bring in some props to give this personality and charm.  Have some boxes singled out on pedestals or something so that it breaks up the monotony. As it is, it's pretty bland. Your boxes will look better still, too.

If these curtains are something you'll be using at shows, are they secure at bottom so they don't fly around all the time? Why use the white curtains if they look pretty much like white tent walls anyway?

    • Barrie Lynn...Booth shots for the jury are most always different in everyone's photos than they are at the shows. All knowledgeable individuals that have attended juries have advised to keep the booth photos clean and free of clutter for jurying.

At shows we have 16x20 hanging photos of individual boxes in addition to a 24x60 banner. We also have two tables that display and highlight several special boxes.

We use curtains at the shows and they look much better than the vinyl sides of the tent. Can't say I have ever found the look of white vinyl appealing and The curtains have 1/2" pvc pipe that slips in the bottom that is secured to the sta-bars.

      • I think your boxes look great. But I think the photo doesn't do them the justice they deserve. I think jurors also consider the merchandising aspect of the booth. That's some advice I heard from a friend who lives at St. Louis and sat in on that mock jury a few years ago.

I wasn't suggesting that you clutter up the booth. Yes, booth photos for jury are quite often different than how we display for customers. But it's more because we're trying to appeal to the camera angle which is the juror's view point. By not having a better merchandised scene, I think it lessens the impact of your wonderful work.

I know this is my opinion. And it might not matter to a juror. It might if I was the juror.

  • Greg, Wow beautiful work!  Honestly though, my eye first went to the shelves, which are very nice, but you want people to look at your boxes.  I think you should consider painting the shelves a solid white to blend into the background.  Then the focus would be on the boxes.

    • 301659709?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024Laurie...thanks...my shelves are white and the displays are finished with a stone finish that does not show up in the booth photo. Everyone who has seen the stone finish has loved it. My old display was all white and it was entirely too much white.

  • Your work is small, get a few large prints of your work hanging on the walls to call folks in from afar. It would be nice to add a prop (plant) or something with softer lines and complementary color... I might display some of the boxes open. I like hand made boxes. Best wishes in the coming year.
    • Leo...thanks...! I have some 16x20" poster prints of my boxes that I  hang up from the top tent  frame during shows but it seems like using any of then might clutter things up a bit for the jury photos. I want to keep this booth photo as clean and uncluttered for jurying.

  • Hey Greg Little! I would agree with Larry. Angle the shelves slightly to face the camera. The two carpets are very nice tone to go alone with the different wood patterns that you have as well. Do you need to add your lights for the booth shot or leave it as is?

    • Jimmy...thanks for the feedback. I had six different lights that I was using to attempt to brighten up the photos. Today was the first day in a long while that was half way decent for setting up the booth and taking photos... not raining, cold or windy..but it still was quite overcast. I took well over 100 photos at different settings and this was the best without having the lights showing in the photo. I also usually have a 24" x 60" banner on the back wall in addition to 16x20" photos of my boxes on both sides...but I left them out because of identification and al cluttered look.
