How to decide between shows

Hi everyone-

Thanks for all your great responses. I hope after this year, when I've got some experience under my belt, I can contribute a bit more!

One question, when you get into a show the same weekend how do you choose?

Specifically, I got into Wells St in Chi-town, Three Rivers in Pittsburgh, and one near my house in Cleveland.

Cleveland would be cheaper, but I would love to go to a new city. Does anyone have feedback on Wells St vs. Three Rivers. It seems like Three Rivers has more positive reviews...

And if I cancel on Wells St. does that blackmark  you in the future?

As always, your responses are SO appreciated.

Thanks!
Renee

  • Thanks Larry...I did end up going with Three Rivers. I love Pittsburgh, so I figured it would be fun to spend a few days there.
  • I've never done the Guild shows other than Ann Arbor but given a choice, I would do Three Rivers for either the five or six day periods. I live in Pittsburgh but that's not the reason. I just think it has more potential than Wells St.

  • I got into the Crocker Park show, which would be the cheapest BUT I already have my work around town and I think much of the crowd is likely to have already seen my work so thought I might try a new city instead.
  • Normally the answer is whichever show you get into. But seeing that you've gotten into three, you need to take other factors into consideration. Don't worry about being black listed for canceling a show. If that were the case, none of us would be doing shows for very long.

Factors to consider are reputation, overall expenses including driving distances and hotel fees, whether or not the show actually refunds your money if you cancel and is there a deadline for that.

If a shows don't have a refund policy, I'd wait until a few days before and check the weather for the most desirable location.

Three Rivers can be an awkward setup and subject to the wind. But it's not nearly as difficult as Wells St. can be. If you do shows by yourself, I'd go with Three Rivers over Wells St.

What show near Cleveland did you get into?
