Hello,

I was told of this site by one of the current members and they thought it might be a good idea if I posted. I am an agent for RLI and noticed that some of the memebers on this forum had some questions concering the Business Owners Policy (BOP). I am not trying to sell my product on this site, but wanted to give anyone the opportunity to ask me any questions about the policy and how it would cover them if they sold arts and crafts items at fairs or festivals.

Thanks

    Hi Aimee,

I would have to make sure that the business qualifies for a policy with RLI, but I would enjoy the chance to speak with you about a policy. Depending on what you do, where you are at and the limits you need - I can usually get crafters started with a policy roughly between $175-$250 for the year.

    My direct # is 866-741-6560

Chris, I would like to talk to you about a quote. Show season starts for me in July, and I have no coverage yet (this is my first season).

  • The big consideration here is that the property or cash is always in your care, custody or control - that basically means that you are taking reasonable precautions to make sure the valuables are safeguarded - if stuff is in the car, make sure the car is locked. If stuff is at your booth, make sure you are in the booth and do not leave it unattended...as long as the property is being safeguarded and a covered loss occurs, you would not have to worry.

In terms of the limits of coverage, the most we cover for money and securities (cash and checks) is $10K at the home and $5K away from the home. In terms of inventory, tools, materials, home office equipment - this goes up to $100K in $100 increments...

In terms of your scenario, the cash would probably be covered under the Business policy - most auto policies tend to exclude any property that is used for a commercial purpose (you may want to consult with your personal auto carrier, but this is how most auto polcies follow). The restaurant probably would not cover it bc most of them have some sort of "not responsible for lost or stolen goods" notices for the public.

    Chris,

    Thanks for coming over here.

You mention theft from vehicles. Lately I have come across some fellow exhibitors who have had their trucks broken into at restaurants after a show on Saturday night, and had their cash bags stolen. One had upwards of $10,000 taken. How is that covered? You? The auto policy? The restaurant's policy? And are there limits as to how much is covered in a case like this?

Also, what about theft at shows? How is that handled?

We need straightfoward information, and I'm glad you're here to tell us.

    Thanks

  • The Business Property is covered at the Home, In-Transit to a Show and while someone is at a show - we do not cover autos or trailers, but the Business Property inside would be covered if there was an accident or if someone forced their way into the car and stole something for example.

    Christopher,

I think someone had a question as to whether your policy covered losses to and from a show in addition to at the show and at the home shop?

    Thanks

    Hi Michael,

What we offer is a standard Business Owners Policy (BOP) - to qualify for the policy, an individual must run the business from the home, other than when attending shows and they must fit into one of our pre-qualified business classes. There are many classes - artists, crafters, ceramic artisits, windshield repair reps, interior window treatments - just to name a few.

What is basically cover is Business Property (inventory, tools, raw materials, etc.) and Business Liability (someone trips in your booth or someone claims your product injured them).

The premiums for the policy depend on the limits one chooses for the Property and Liability coverage but most of the policies that I write are generally between $150-$250 for the year - this includes as many shows as you want, anywhere in the country.

Any more questions - let me know.

    Thanks

Thanks for posting Christopher. I know that people are interested in finding some of the specifics of what is covered so that if they compare, it is based on similar coverage.
