I've always just created originals in mixed media - no prints..... until now. I would really love some advise from those of you who offer prints on how you package them.

* On what do you mount them.... what type of board or paper?

* Do you always include a mat? - If so, how do you attach the mat to the print?

* Where do you get the plastic wrap to protect your piece?

Geez - you'd think I'd know this.... but honestly, I've never really paid attention because I'm always focused on originals.

Thanks in advance.

Kathy

  • I have not used this company but have heard Documounts is a good source for mats, mounts (foam), and bag. My source has gone under so I will be looking at some new resources in the near future.  I guess I'll give this one a try.
    • I use Documounts and love them! They are especially good if you work in a few sizes repeatedly---they have great multiple price breaks even on custom-cut mats, starting at eight pieces. They do beautiful work and are very nice and efficient.
  • Thanks Larry! That sounds easy.

  • OK "REPRODUCTION" instead of print..... on good paper and not cheap. :)

    • Thank you for your clarification!

      1) I mount all my originals, whether put them in a frame or just matted, to an acid free foam board.  I get mine from M&M distributors http://www.mmdistributors.com/

      2) I always include a mat - I double mat, using 100% acid free rag mat from Crescent - again ordering from M&M.  I cut my own mats since I'm selling originals and each piece may need a slightly different mat width, even though I always do standard sizes for the outside dimensions.  I attach the mat to the foam board using ATG tape (again from M&M) - the tape does not touch my art work as the art work isn't as big as the foam board.

      3) What Larry said - clearbags.com

    • The type of paper doesn't change what it is. If you get an Epson (or Canon) printer you can choose what type of paper you want to print on.

But to answer your questions, most artists offer their work backed with foam core in in an acid free display bag from http://ClearBags.com and if you sell them matted, the best way is to hinge them with acid free framers tape before putting them into the bags.

  • If you stop using the word print when you mean reproduction, I'll answer all of your questions.  I display unframed original art work and have to deal with the same issues.
  • http://www.clearbags.com You can get the bags for the prints from this site. Thats as much as I know at this time, I am just getting into making prints as well. Hope others put in some words.

    Goodluck.
