Hello to everyone!

I've been talking to some artist's on here but haven't had the time to formally introduce myself.

My name is Farah Darwish and I am the child of Norm Darwish and Connie Mettler. My Dad's picture, for those of you who don't know him is on the photographers group page. I'm sure all of you know Connie! I have been doing art fairs with them since I was 9 years old and have fond memories of them. When I got old enough, I started working the shows with them both occasionally unless Connie was out of town, then it was my Dad and I. I also worked behind the scenes hand-coloring his black and white photos for about 16 yrs.

When I went back to college in my 30's, I was ready to major in photography but took a metals class as an elective and fell in love with it. I loved the ceramics classes too and eventually would like to incorporate the two but right now I concentrate on the metals. Because I don't have a studio per say, I do mainly jewelry pieces. But my love is for creating vessel work.....anything that's functional. Besides using the torches and hammering the metal into any form you want is insanely satisfying!

I have only done a few art shows on my own but not to the extent that my parents did. I haven't decided if that's a route I want to go but I do know a lot about it being as I was around it most of my life. Right now I just do commissions and help Connie with this site. I'm glad to be here and hope to make lots of friends. Not to mention, all the information I'm gleaning from all of you!

So great luck to all of you in your shows and may this year be stellar!

  • Hi Farah,

Welcome to AFI. I've been too busy to jump in earlier.

    Larry Berman

    • Thanks Larry :) I remember you from the shows!

  • Hi Farah!  This is so interesting---Mom and daugther conversing on this sight.  And missing the Michigan winter.  That's funny as so many of us are in f=Florida for the winter.  Sounds like you inherited the creative gene.  Looking forward to more of your posts and maybe a show review along the way.

    • Hi Pat,

Yes, creativity runs in my family...makes for interesting family get togethers let me tell ya! LOL!

  • Thanks Farah.  Josh will be moving to do his internship at Yale University.  I am so excited for him but wish he wasn't going to be so far.  They just keep moving farther away!

    • I know the feeling. All three of mine in three different states :/  But two of them will be in college in the fall so it's all good!

  • Welcome, Farah! I'm so pleased to have you on this site and to have you share your depth of art and art fairs with the members here. You've got so much info about the business side of art fairs that I'll bet you can answer 50% of the questions and be a friendly face for the new members.

Are you working on any projects right now?

I miss seeing your shiny face since you moved away but now we'll at least be in closer contact on AFI.

    • Connie! I bet you were wondering where I was. Moving pretty much sucks but I have gotten to see my son! He was so excited to see me, he hugged me in front of his friends!

I am working on a commission piece for a lady that she wanted made for her sister. I was having a hard time finding the pendant she wanted for the bracelet I'm making but a friend of mine in Oregon found one and it's on the way. I'm also continuing the hand-woven fine silver chains I make. They take awhile but they're so beautiful when they're done it's worth the time :)

I'm going to try to come see you and Dad when I get everything situated.

      • I knew you'd escaped from Tennessee and have been waiting for you to appear here as I was pretty sure you were up to your elbows in logistics. Welcome back to Michigan and to AFI where I know you'll be an asset in helping keep everything rolling here. Thanks!

        • Escape from Tennessee!.....That's hilarious! But true. Nice to travel through but not my cup of tea. I'm still up to my elbows in logistics but slowly getting there...I think. Sometimes by the end of the day, I wonder if I actually got anything done even though I had been running non-stop!

And I will try not to disappoint here....I think I'm learning more than I could ever answer :)
