I've just joined  and am finding lots of information to help.  I do fiber work, more specifically, I do freeform knitting and crochet as well as felting to make apparel and accessories.  I've been knitting since I was in college and finally decided to see if my hobby can be more than a money pit!  I am in 4 shows so far this year and on a couple of wait lists so I'm excited.  I do have a website.  It's www.knittygrittybysara.com.  I would put an attachment but I'm not that computer savvy and my secretary (husband) is already in bed! Looking forward to meeting you al!

  • Welcome Sara to AFI!

  • Hi Sara and welcome to AFI :)

  • I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you might want to re-think your business name - especially if you think you might ever want to wholesale your work or have a higher profile for your business. They might not come after you, but the the TV show "Knitty Gritty" has probably trademarked the name already. It would just be a huge bummer to have to re-brand your business after you have gained a customer following if they do decide to get snarky and come after you some day. Corporations are getting nastier and nastier - for example the Chick-Fil-A people actually went after an artist making t-shirts that said "eat more kale" because they thought it was too close to their trademarked "Eat mor chikin"!  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/05/us/eat-more-kale-t-shirts-challen... so stranger things have happened.

I do hope you have a lot of success this summer though no matter the name you choose!

  • Welcome, Sara. I love the free form of your work and the obvious enjoyment you are having creating these one of a kind goods. I knit quite a bit myself and my daughter-in-law is a knitwear designer. I always enjoy seeing fiber artists come along in this category. Knitting is so labor intensive, there are few knitters at the shows, a lot of them burn out. I hope you'll be able to find your niche. There are quite a few Chicago area members here who will support you and you will meet at the shows this summer. Why don't you join the Chicago group and make some new friends?
