I am new here, three months ago, spending a lot of time in Rockford, IL, and I would like if someone answer me how can I get at the aft fairs here, in Chicago area, and present some of my works as a stained glass artist. I`m in this business for 23 years, with big experience, working whole different designs. I would like to know if I can participate at art fair shows in 2010, in this region?
Best regards,
Maja Kovac
Hello Maja, welcome to this site. I hope you find it very helpful and useful. It looks like you've gotten some good responses so far. Good luck in the upcoming year of art fairs!
In addition, look into applying to Wells Street which is also listed on ZAPP. Not as good as the others but does draw some of the same people who attend the Old Town show because it's only three blocks away. The Amdur shows are on Juried Art Services, so you have to be set up on that as well as on ZAPP.

Then you will want to go with the ones already listed for you: 57th Street, Old Town, Naperville, Port Clinton are the best ones. You may want to visit amdurproductions.com for one of the producers lists. There are 12 at that website for 2010, arguably not all equal but with Port Clinton the best of the bunch. You may want to post a question on this site about which of those to apply for also.
These events are all juried and it is competitive to get a space in one. Be forewarned :)
So, I am interested for high quality art shows, in Chicago area. If you know exactly what art fairs show can provide this, please let me know. I`ve been in stained glass business for 20 years, and all of my pieces show high quality of workmanship and original designes.
Thank you for letting me know about Sales Tax office.
"The level of shows" Larry is talking about is how fine an event you are interested in. The fairs run the gamut from "loving hands" (mom and pop making cutesy things) to fine art fairs with expensive paintings and sculpture. Where do you see yourself falling in that continuum?
As best I know there is no problem about non-citizens selling art at the fairs. Canadians participate here regularly and I know people from other countries are here also. Each event is held independently and each state has different ways of collecting sales tax. If you are planning on participating in Illinois events you should get ahold of the Sales Tax office in Springfield for a license.
Why don't you post this question to the discussion area "Business of Art Fairs." There are many artists from Illinois on this site and I'm sure someone else can give you a better answer.
Larry, can you explain me in a few words, what did you mean when you said in "what level", about applying for art shows? As I`m coming from Serbia, and spending some time in Rockford during the year, are there something else that I need to know about participating in art fairs, as a guest?

You don't say what level of shows you're looking to apply to. The better Chicago shows are on ZAPP. Old Town, 57th Street, Wells Street. Sunshine Artist Magazine has the most comprehensive list of shows in the country. The Art Fair SourceBook lists only the better shows in the country. There are also promoter shows that run in some of the Chicago Malls and convention centers.
Thank you Connie for details about artfairs. You helped me about getting the right contacts for specific artfair. Also what I would like to know , is there any special terms for artist who are not Americans, and who wants to be on art fairs (like are there any taxes that we have to pay if we sell something etc)?

Welcome Maja. As Larry said Sunshine Artist has thousands of listings of art fairs and is a good place to start. Subscribing to it is inexpensive. Visit their website: www.sunshineartist.com for more info. Please tell them I sent you.
ArtFairSourcebook is also excellent in-depth information. Visit their website for more details: www.artfairsourcebook.com ArtFairCalendar.com is my other site and it is a good enough listing of art fairs. It does not try to be all inclusive, but still lists close to 500 art fairs. Click on the Chicago page for a good listing of events in your area. In Chicago the top-ranked shows (most competitive, best quality) are Old Town, 57th Street, Naperville and Port Clinton. The best place to get their addresses/contact info are at the NAIA site at this link: http://naia-artists.org/resources/allshows.htm
While you are at the ArtFairCalendar site you might find it helpful to subscribe to the newsletter for lots more show information.
