I'm interested in trying to capture the emails of folks who visit my booth at shows, but I'm not quite sure what to do with them. Obviously I'd like to keep them apprised of my work and shows I'll be doing, but I'd love to hear from people who can tell me how they successfully do this, and what they do with the emails once they have them. For example, if I go to an out of town show, do I keep a spreadsheet to know whose emails I got from that show and then use it to let those folks know when I'll be back in town? Look forward to any ideas on mailing lists of potential and past buyers that you can provide.

I do a quarterly newsletter to anyone who indicates theiy're happy to get them. I send out reminders when a show is imminent and invitations to some shows where it is a bit more relaxed and I think I will have the opportunity to chat a bit more.
Get every name you can, Peter, and additionally get their email address. Some artists do mailings to clients still but email has really taken over here. I really encourage you to find an email mailing program to handle your database, not a spreadsheet. Some of the advantages are easy upload of data, people can subscribe and unsubscribe it takes a lot of the data keeping out of your hands and it is free to low cost for beginners. You can sort by city, zip code, etc. I use Constant Contact for my business and have 21 categories of subscribers and it isn't any more complicated than just one.
